Where flammable substances are stored in sealed containers, a standard laboratory refrigeration unit is not sufficient. The Liebherr SRUfg 1001 is an under-counter refrigeration unit from the Performance Series featuring dynamic forced air circulation cooling and an ignition-source-free interior, designed for integration beneath a laboratory worktop. With a net volume of 80 l and external dimensions of 59.7 x 58.4 x 81.9 cm (W x D x H), the unit can be fitted into existing furniture to save space without compromising on safety.

Ignition-source-free interior in accordance with the ATEX Directive

According to the manufacturer, the interior of the SRUfg 1001 complies with EN/IEC 60079-0 and EN-IEC 60079-7, and thus meets the requirements of EU Directive 2014/34/EU, commonly known as the ATEX Directive. The unit is therefore suitable, according to the manufacturer, for flammable substances in sealed containers that could form explosive atmospheres. In addition to the general laboratory standards series IEC 60068-3, IEC 61010-1, IEC 61010-2-011 and IEC 61326-1, Liebherr explicitly cites the standard EN IEC 60079-7.

Under-counter unit with height-adjustable feet

The SRUfg 1001 is designed for integration into furniture with front ventilation. Height-adjustable levelling feet (0 to 60 mm) allow the unit to be adapted to a recess with a height of 82.0 to 88.0 cm; the required recess width is 60.0 cm, and the recess depth is 58.0 cm. The housing and door are made of white steel, whilst the inner container is made of easy-to-clean white plastic; the door closes automatically and, if required, the hinge side can be reversed.

Glass shelves instead of grid shelves

The SRUfg 1001 is fitted with glass shelves instead of plastic-coated grid shelves; there are 3 shelves in total, 2 of which are height-adjustable, each with a load capacity of 40 kg and a usable area of 45.0 x 40.8 cm. This model does not feature separate interior lighting. The interior cools within a range of +3 °C to +16 °C; a monochrome display with touch buttons shows the current temperature; in the event of faults, the unit issues visual and audible warnings; a power failure alarm sounds when mains power is restored.

Networking and non-ATEX alternative

Via the retrofittable Wi-Fi and LAN interfaces, the SRUfg 1001 can be connected to Liebherr’s SmartMonitoring if required; a potential-free contact also enables connection to an existing building management system. If an ATEX version is not required, the SRUvg 1001 (994788151), which is of identical construction, is available as a standard version without an ignition-source-free interior, featuring plastic-coated grid shelves instead of glass shelves and interior lighting. The unit is fundamentally SmartMonitoring-compatible; connection is via the optional SmartModule.

Connection and cooling capacity

The SRUfg 1001 operates with a rated power consumption of 80 W at 220-240 V and 50/60 Hz, fused at 10 to 16 A; the supplied connection cable is 3,000 mm long. Starting from an empty state, the unit cools down from +25 °C to +5 °C in around 38 minutes at an ambient temperature of +25 °C; after the door has been open for one minute, it takes around 4 minutes to return to the set temperature. These figures are laboratory values in accordance with EN 60068-3 and are intended as a guide for practical use; they do not constitute an assurance in individual cases. The adjustable feet are made of plastic; the maximum installation altitude is 2,000 m above sea level.

Typical applications

The SRUfg 1001 is suitable wherever flammable or highly flammable substances need to be stored in a cooled state beneath the laboratory worktop and where an interior free from ignition sources is either required or advisable. In practice, this often means a laboratory in which organic solvents, alcohols or other flammable reagents are to be kept within easy reach but safely stored in a refrigerated state beneath the worktop, rather than in a separate, more distant explosion-proof area.
