The safe storage of highly sensitive samples at extremely low temperatures requires a compact unit that nevertheless makes no compromises when it comes to monitoring. The Liebherr SUFsg 3501 is a laboratory ultra-low temperature freezer from the MediLine series, designed for a temperature range of -40 °C to -86 °C. With a net volume of 382 litres, it is the smallest of the three SUFsg models available from LT Laborhandel. The housing and door are made of steel, whilst the inner chamber is made of durable stainless steel.

Extreme temperatures with verified stability

The temperature is displayed digitally on the outside and can be set within the range of -40 °C to -86 °C, with a permissible ambient temperature of +16 °C to 32 °C. Temperature stability and consistency are tested in accordance with the EN 60068-3 test procedure. The natural refrigerant R 290 is used (charge: 150 g), an environmentally friendly choice with low global warming potential.

Three-stage monitoring system

The SUFsg 3501 immediately signals temperature, door or mains faults with visual and audible alerts. In the event of a power cut, an integrated 12-volt battery provides backup power for at least 72 hours – significantly longer than with most laboratory refrigerators operating in the positive temperature range. A LAN interface can be retrofitted, allowing the unit to be integrated into the laboratory or hospital network if required. Those requiring even more comprehensive monitoring can supplement the basic system with expandable features such as CO₂ emergency cooling and online monitoring.

Interior design for continuous operation at –86 °C

Foam-lined inner doors provide additional insulation and more stable temperature control inside the chamber; the inner chamber, as well as the shelves and inner doors, are made of stainless steel, which is easy to clean and withstands the demands of daily laboratory operation. Four shelving levels ensure organised storage; three of these are height-adjustable and can therefore be adapted to different container and box sizes. The solid aluminium handle with integrated opening mechanism facilitates operation even when wearing laboratory gloves, whilst the door – hinged on the right – is secured by a mechanical lock. Defrosting is carried out manually, as is standard for an appliance designed for such low temperatures.

The most compact model in the SUFsg series

With a net volume of 382 l, the SUFsg 3501 is the smallest of the three SUFsg models available from LT Laborhandel, being significantly narrower than the larger SUFsg 5001 and SUFsg 7001 models. For those who do not yet need to store large quantities of samples at –86 °C, or who require a second, physically separate unit for a smaller collection, the SUFsg 3501 offers a fully-fledged laboratory ultra-low temperature freezer with the same electronics, the same monitoring system and the same MediLine positioning as its larger counterparts, but with a smaller footprint in the laboratory. The more compact design also makes it easier to install in rooms with limited floor space, without compromising on the temperature range or battery buffering.

Installation and connection

With external dimensions of 196.6 x 79.7 x 108.2 cm (H x W x D) and a net weight of 226 kg, the SUFsg 3501 is designed for a fixed installation in the laboratory, whilst being noticeably narrower than the larger SUFsg models. The unit operates at 230 V with a connected load of 7.0 A and is supplied with a 2,800 mm long connection cable; a standard laboratory power socket is therefore sufficient. Given that the unit is 90.1 cm wide when the door is open, sufficient space for manoeuvring should be allowed for at the installation site.

Typical applications

The SUFsg 3501 is suitable for laboratories that need to store enzymes, reagents, biological samples or other temperature-sensitive substances permanently at very low temperatures, but do not require the capacity of the larger SUFsg models, such as in smaller research groups, biobanks or pharmaceutical development. A stable, well-monitored cold chain is crucial, particularly when samples must remain unchanged for months or years. If, for example, the cold chain must be maintained even during a brief power cut, the 72-hour battery backup provides significantly more time than a technician would normally need to rectify the fault. Newly established research groups, which initially build up only a manageable sample collection, also benefit from the compact design without having to compromise on safety or monitoring.
