To store large quantities of samples safely at extremely low temperatures, you need a piece of equipment you can rely on. The Liebherr SUFsg 7001 is a laboratory ultra-low temperature freezer for the temperature range from -40 °C to -86 °C, delivering reliable, top-class performance. Temperature stability and consistency are tested and guaranteed in accordance with the EN 60068-3 test procedure. The housing and door are made of steel, whilst the inner chamber is made of durable stainless steel. The SUFsg 7001 is part of Liebherr’s MediLine series for scientific sample storage and, with a net volume of 700 l, is the largest of the three SUFsg models stocked by LT Laborhandel.

Technology and cooling capacity

The temperature is displayed digitally on the outside and can be set within a range of -40 °C to -86 °C, with a permissible ambient temperature of +16 °C to 32 °C. The natural refrigerant R 290 is used (charge: 150 g), an environmentally friendly choice with a low global warming potential compared to conventional synthetic refrigerants. In the event of a fault, the unit issues visual and audible warnings, ensuring that temperature deviations are immediately noticeable. Via a retrofittable LAN interface, the ultra-low temperature freezer can, if required, be integrated into an existing laboratory or hospital network and monitored remotely.

Interior design and ease of use

The stainless steel inner chamber is particularly durable and easy to clean, an important factor for day-to-day laboratory operations, especially given the SUFsg 7001’s large capacity and the correspondingly high sample throughput. Foam-insulated inner doors provide additional stable insulation and temperature control. Four shelves in the freezer compartment ensure organised storage; three of these are height-adjustable and adapt to different container sizes, from small cryoboxes to larger sample containers. The solid aluminium handle with integrated opening mechanism makes operation easy, even when wearing gloves, as is common in everyday laboratory work. The door hinge is permanently fitted on the right-hand side; when the door is open, the unit is 130.2 cm wide. Defrosting is carried out manually, which is standard for a unit designed for such low temperatures, as automatic defrost cycles at -86 °C would be technically more complex and less suitable for sample safety.

The SUFsg 7001 is designed for scientific use and is suitable for laboratories that need to store large quantities of enzymes, reagents, biological samples or other temperature-sensitive substances permanently at very low temperatures. Particularly when samples must remain unchanged for months or years, a stable, well-monitored cold chain is crucial; continuous temperature monitoring with visual and audible alarms ensures precisely this, without staff having to check the temperature manually.

Three-stage monitoring system

In addition to visual and audible alarms in the event of a fault, an integrated 12-volt battery provides backup power for at least 72 hours in the event of a power cut, significantly longer than with most laboratory refrigeration units in the positive temperature range. Those requiring even more comprehensive monitoring can supplement the basic system with expandable features such as CO2 emergency cooling and online monitoring. The SUFsg 7001 is the largest model in the SUFsg series from LT Laborhandel, which also comprises two more compact models, the SUFsg 3501 and the SUFsg 5001, each featuring the same MediLine positioning and monitoring concept.

Installation and connection

With external dimensions of 196.6 x 120.4 x 108.2 cm (H x W x D) and a net weight of 313 kg, the SUFsg 7001 is designed for a permanent installation in the laboratory. The unit operates at 230 V with a connected load of 7.0 A and is supplied with a 2,800 mm long connection cable; a standard laboratory power socket is therefore sufficient. Given that the unit is 130.2 cm wide when the door is open, sufficient space for manoeuvring should be allowed for at the installation site. Given its weight of 313 kg, a sturdy, level access route is recommended for transport to the final installation site, particularly if the unit is not to be installed at ground level, for example, when delivered via a lift or a ramp.
