Product information "Macherey-Nagel glass fibre filter paper circles MN 85/90 with binder, 0.5 µm (Ø 25–320 mm), 185 mm"
The Macherey-Nagel MN 85/90 glass fibre filter circles are intended for general laboratory filtration. They consist of borosilicate glass microfibres with an organic binder, have a smooth, white surface and a thickness of 0.6 mm. The average retention capacity is 0.5 µm and the filtration speed is 15 s. One pack contains 100 filters, and 13 diameters from 25 to 320 mm are available.
Glass fibre filter circles with and without binder
The organic binder holds the glass fibres together. According to Macherey-Nagel, this gives the filter comparatively high mechanical stability. The binder-free counterpart MN 85/90 BF has the same retention capacity of 0.5 µm and the same grammage of 90 g/m². At 0.51 mm it is slightly thinner than the MN 85/90 at 0.6 mm, and it withstands 500 °C, whereas the MN 85/90 withstands only 200 °C.
If you only filter off the residue and dry it at up to 200 °C, the filter with binder is sufficient. For higher temperatures and for aggressive solutions, the BF version is the better choice because it contains no organic component.
MN 85/90 or MN 85/70
The MN 85/70 is also a glass fibre filter with an organic binder and a filtration speed of 15 s. At 0.6 µm it retains more coarsely, weighs 73 g/m² and is 0.42 mm thick. The MN 85/90 is therefore finer, heavier and thicker. If the finer retention of 0.5 µm matters, the MN 85/90 is the suitable type.
Typical applications
- Clarification filtration of solutions, extracts and digests before analysis
- Separation of precipitates and solids in vacuum filtration
- Prefiltration of samples that would quickly clog a membrane filter
- Routine filtration in the laboratory up to 200 °C
Available diameters
The diameter depends on the funnel or filter holder. The filter circle should cover the perforated plate completely without standing up at the edge. All 13 diameters are listed in the table with the manufacturer’s item number.
