Memmert ultra-low temperature freezer ULT240eco, 244 l, -50 to -86 °C, inverter compressors

The Memmert ULT240eco ultra-low temperature freezer cools samples to between minus 50 and minus 86 °C and has an internal capacity of 244 litres, accommodating up to 162 2-inch cryoboxes. It is the smallest of five sizes in the eco series and has a footprint of 700 by 738 millimetres.

A compact entry point into your own ultra-low temperature storage

The interior has a capacity of 244 litres and can support up to 280 kilograms, with each shelf capable of bearing up to 140 kilograms. Three height-adjustable shelves and two stainless-steel inner doors divide the interior into four sections, allowing samples to be separated by project or user group without having to open the entire interior every time access is required. The unit is mounted on castors and can be locked in place; its external dimensions are 700 × 1,832 × 738 millimetres. It is transported in an upright position.

Cascade cooling with inverter compressors

Two cascade-connected inverter compressors generate the low temperature, the first stage using the refrigerant R290 and the second using R170, with an air-cooled condenser. The standard ULT240 model operates with two cascade-connected compressors without inverters and uses R455A in the first stage. The inverter cascade in the eco variant is designed for precise temperature control and high energy efficiency.

Operation and monitoring

The 7-inch touchscreen is ergonomically positioned in the outer door and controls the temperature to an accuracy of 0.1 °C. A Pt1000 temperature sensor continuously monitors the chamber, whilst a visual and audible alarm signals any deviations. Ethernet LAN and USB interfaces are fitted as standard. In the event of a power cut, a backup battery takes over the alarm function, ensuring that a fault is reported even without mains power.

Safety and door

The insulated stainless-steel outer door locks with a mechanical door lock, whilst a door-open detection system alerts the user if the door remains open for too long. A 26-millimetre-diameter feed-through or pressure relief opening is situated on the side. The battery-backed alarm system remains active even during a mains power failure.

Is the 244-litre chamber suitable, or would the next size up be better?

Those expecting growing sample volumes will reach the limit at 162 2-inch format boxes. In that case, the larger ULT360eco, with capacity for 264 boxes, is suitable. For workgroups with a stable, manageable sample volume and limited floor space, the ULT240eco remains the suitable entry-level size in the eco series; Memmert does not offer a smaller version in this range.
