With an internal volume of 506 litres and a wider housing than the smaller models, the Memmert ULT500 represents the medium-sized model in the ULT series. Up to 384 2-inch cryoboxes can be stored at temperatures between -50 and -86 °C without the need for multiple smaller units.
Wider housing for more samples
Unlike the ULT240 and ULT360, the ULT500 features a larger housing, measuring 850 millimetres wide (compared to 700 millimetres), with an external height of 2,000 millimetres and an external depth of 888 millimetres. The internal dimensions are 600 x 1,345 x 627 millimetres; the net weight is approximately 343 kilograms, and the packaged weight is around 430 kilograms.
Control, monitoring, alarms
The ULT500 is also operated via the 7-inch touchscreen in the outer door; the temperature can be set with a setting accuracy of 0.1 °C and is monitored by a Pt1000 sensor. Ethernet LAN and USB are available for connection to a laboratory system. In the event of a power failure, a backup battery ensures that alarms are triggered and monitoring continues; the alarm is both visual and audible.
Design, door and interior
Two cascade-connected compressors provide cooling using the refrigerants R455A in the first stage and R170 in the second; the condenser is air-cooled. Inside, two stainless steel inner doors and three height-adjustable shelves provide four separate compartments; the outer doors are insulated and secured with a mechanical door lock. A door-open detection system and a side pressure relief vent with a diameter of 26 millimetres are also included.
Transport and installation
With a net weight of around 343 kilograms and a gross weight of approximately 430 kilograms in its carton, a level access route with a sufficiently wide doorway is recommended for delivery of the ULT500. The unit must only be transported in an upright position; when packed, it measures 1,080 x 2,220 x 1,080 millimetres. At the installation site, it can be positioned using the castors and then locked into place.
Choosing between the ULT360 and ULT750
If 264 boxes are all you need on a permanent basis and you prefer the narrower 700-millimetre cabinet width, the ULT360 is the better choice. If, on the other hand, it is already clear that more than 384 boxes will need to be stored, it is worth taking a direct look at the ULT750 with its 750-litre capacity, rather than having to purchase a second unit later on.
