The Memmert ULT500eco ultra-low temperature freezer operates at temperatures ranging from minus 50 to minus 86 °C and, with an internal volume of 506 litres, provides space for up to 384 2-inch cryoboxes. Institutes with long-term, predictable storage requirements will find this a medium-sized floor-standing model that offers significantly more capacity than the ULT360eco, without reaching the dimensions of the 750- and 1000-litre models.
506 litres for institutions with long-term storage requirements
The interior can support a total load of up to 360 kilograms, with each of the three height-adjustable shelves capable of bearing up to 180 kilograms. Two stainless steel internal doors divide the interior into four sections. Externally, the ULT500eco measures 850 by 2,000 by 888 millimetres; it is mounted on castors that can be locked in place and must be transported in an upright position.
Energy efficiency through inverter cascade
Two cascade-connected inverter compressors handle the cooling: the first stage uses R290, the second stage uses R170, with an air-cooled condenser. The inverter compressors adjust their speed to the cooling demand; the system is designed for precise temperature control and high energy efficiency. The standard ULT500 model, which is the same size, operates without inverter compressors and uses the refrigerant R455A in the first stage.
Touchscreen, Pt1000 and interfaces
The 7-inch touchscreen on the outer door displays the setpoint temperature and status at a glance; the setting accuracy is 0.1 °C. A Pt1000 sensor continuously monitors the temperature; any deviations are signalled by a visual and audible alarm. The cabinet comes as standard with Ethernet LAN and USB interfaces; remote monitoring is available as an option.
How the door and alarm perform in an emergency
The insulated stainless-steel outer door can be locked using the mechanical door lock, and is also fitted with a door-open detection system. On the side is a feed-through or pressure relief vent with a diameter of 26 millimetres. In the event of a power cut, a backup battery maintains the alarm and monitoring functions.
Larger or smaller than the ULT500eco?
If 264 boxes and a smaller footprint are sufficient, the ULT360eco is the better choice. If you anticipate needing more than 384 boxes, or if multiple user groups are to have simultaneous access, it is worth considering the ULT750eco, which offers 750 litres and 576 boxes. The ULT500eco itself is best suited to institutions with consistently high, but not extreme, storage requirements.
