Sauter Leeb hardness tester HK-DB for metals, portable hardness tester

Product information "Sauter Leeb hardness tester HK-DB for metals, portable hardness tester"

The Sauter HK-DB is a portable hardness tester for metals based on the Leeb method. It measures directly on the workpiece, not in the laboratory, and covers a range from 170 to 960 HLD. The type D rebound sensor is connected to the evaluation unit via a cable and is included in the scope of delivery. If a large or heavy component cannot be transported for hardness testing, the tester is taken to the component.

How the Leeb hardness test works

In the Leeb method, a test body strikes the surface; the hardness is determined from the rebound velocity. The measurement result is initially given on the Leeb scale. The HK-DB uses the HLD scale, where the ‘D’ stands for the sensor type. The device automatically converts the result into other hardness units. According to the data sheet, these are HL, HV, HB, HRB and HRC.

Measurement in any orientation

The device automatically compensates for the direction of the test. It measures in all directions (360°), including sideways and overhead. The connected rebound sensor is automatically detected. The sensor is 14.6 cm long and has a diameter of 2 cm. The test specimen must weigh at least 2 kg and have a thickness of at least 3 mm. The tolerance is 1 %, and the readability is 1 HL.

Storage and analysis

The internal memory can store up to 600 measurement groups, each containing up to 32 individual readings. The device calculates the average from the values in each group. A mini-statistics display shows the measured value, average value, measurement direction, date and time. The limit value function allows an upper and a lower limit to be programmed; the device signals any exceedances with an audible and visual alert. The graphic LCD is backlit and features 11 mm high digits; the display brings together all key functions on a single screen. Data is transferred from the device via USB; the USB cable is also available.

Housing, batteries, case

The evaluation unit is housed in a cast aluminium casing measuring 132 x 82 x 31 mm and weighs approximately 0.45 kg net. Two AA batteries (1.5 V) provide power for around 200 hours; the batteries are included. The unit is supplied in a carrying case.

Hardness reference block

The scope of delivery includes a hardness reference block with a hardness of approximately 800 HLD. It serves as a reference value for checking the instrument before a series of tests. Additional hardness reference plates of 790, 630 and 530 HL are also available.

Typical applications

  • Automotive industry: checking the hardness of shafts, gears and castings
  • Metalworking and steel construction: incoming goods testing of semi-finished products and components
  • Energy and power station industry: On-site testing of large components
  • Oil and gas industry: hardness testing of plant components
  • Aerospace: testing of components that cannot be transported to a laboratory

Selection guide: Sensor type and test object

The HK-DB is supplied with the type D sensor. Other rebound sensors, namely type C, type D+15, type DL and type G, are also available. The type best suited to the testing task depends on the component’s shape and material. We would be happy to advise you on your selection.

Regulatory information

As an electrical device, the device falls under the ElektroG. The manufacturer Kern & Sohn GmbH is registered under the WEEE registration number DE 80821200. How to return old appliances is described on the page Environment and disposal.

Frequently asked questions

What materials is the device designed for? For metals, as the name suggests. The measuring range is 170 to 960 HLD.

How heavy does the test specimen need to be? The minimum weight is 2 kg, and the minimum thickness is 3 mm.

Is a USB cable included? No, the cable is also available separately. The device is fitted with a USB port.

Can I take measurements in any direction? Yes, the device automatically compensates for the test direction and measures over 360°.

How do I check the device? Using the supplied hardness reference block, with a hardness of approximately 800 HLD.

How long is the warranty? According to Kern & Sohn, this device comes with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
