Product information "Sauter TB 200-0.1US ultrasonic material thickness gauge, external probe"
The Sauter TB 200-0.1US ultrasonic material thickness gauge is a highly accurate, portable measurement system designed for the non-destructive determination of wall and material thicknesses in industrial manufacturing, maintenance and laboratory environments. When monitoring pipework systems, pressure vessels, metallic structures or polymer components, the precise measurement of material thicknesses is a critical factor in reliably identifying corrosive wear, loss of material or manufacturing deviations. This compact handheld measuring device covers a wide measurement range from 1.5 mm to 200 mm and provides a high degree of resolution down to 0.1 mm. For procurement officers and quality inspectors in quality assurance, this ultrasonic testing device (NDT) offers the highest level of validity, reliability and application-specific flexibility in day-to-day field use.
Ultrasonic measurement principle and transient signal transit time
The physical operating principle of the handheld device is based on the pulse-echo method. A piezoelectric crystal inside the external 5 MHz probe emits high-frequency ultrasonic waves, which penetrate the material sample longitudinally. Upon reaching the opposite boundary of the system (back-wall echo) or an internal defect, the sound is reflected and metrologically detected again by the sensor. The internal electronics calculate the exact distance from this transient signal transit time, taking into account the specific sound velocity of the respective material. With an adjustable sound velocity range of 500 to 9000 m/s, the system can be flexibly calibrated to the material under test, thereby eliminating measurement errors caused by changes in acoustic impedance whilst minimising damage to the material.
Material-scientific versatility and zero-point adjustment
The material-scientific flexibility of the Sauter TB 200-0.1US allows for the precise testing of a wide range of homogeneous materials such as steel, aluminium, cast iron, copper, brass, hard plastics, quartz glass or ceramics. To ensure the continuous integrity of the metrological chain, the housing features an integrated steel zero-point plate (calibration block). This permanently fitted reference surface enables the user to carry out quick and error-free on-site zero-point adjustment before each series of measurements. The combination of external sensor guidance and an integrated reference guarantees excellent reproducibility of the measured values, regardless of environmental influences or temperature fluctuations.
Ergonomic housing design and mobile connectivity
The housing architecture is specifically designed for mobile outdoor use and harsh laboratory conditions. The separation of the display unit and the ultrasonic sensor via a flexible cable allows measurements to be carried out ergonomically and without fatigue in hard-to-reach areas, on curved surfaces or in tight pipe bends. The high-contrast digital LCD display clearly shows the measured thickness values, thereby eliminating reading errors in multi-user operation. Intuitive operation is achieved via wear-free buttons that allow quick switching between units (mm/inch). An integrated auto-off function automatically switches the device off when inactive, significantly extending the battery pack’s operating life.

Individual requirements & accessories
To carry out precise ultrasonic measurements, the use of the supplied coupling gel is gentle on the material and physically essential to completely eliminate air pockets between the probe and the test specimen. For rough or uneven surfaces, we stock special abrasive grinding media for specimen preparation. To support complex testing processes in ISO or DAkkS-certified facilities, we offer optional step calibration blocks as well as manufacturer-compliant factory calibration certificates. Please use our procurement service to configure your bespoke test setup.
