SAUTER TD 225-0.1US Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge, external sensor, 225 mm

The Sauter TD 225-0.1US is a pocket-sized ultrasonic thickness gauge. It measures thicknesses from 1.2 mm to 225 mm, with a readability of 0.1 mm, and features an external probe attached to a 0.9 m cable. The gauge itself measures 30 x 65 x 120 mm and weighs approximately 0.2 kg.

Measuring with the external probe

The device operates using the pulse-echo method and therefore requires access to only one side of the component. The probe has a diameter of 8 mm and operates at 5 MHz. The sound velocity range extends from 1,000 to 9,999 m/s, with a tolerance of 0.5 % of the maximum value. Ultrasonic couplant gel is applied between the probe and the workpiece. The supplied zero plate is used for adjustment.

Data transfer

According to Kern, the TD 225-0.1US comes with an RS-232 data interface as standard. This allows measured values to be transferred to a PC or printer. The unit can be switched between mm and inch, whilst an auto-off function saves the batteries.

Power and operation

The device runs on four AAA batteries (1.5 V), which are included in the scope of delivery. It may be operated at 0 °C to 50 °C and is also stored at 0 °C to 50 °C. The housing is made of plastic.

The TD 225-0.1US has the widest measuring range of the three instruments (up to 225 mm; the TB 200-0.1US up to 200 mm; the TN 80-0.1US up to 80 mm) and, at 0.2 kg, is also the lightest. If you need to measure thicknesses greater than 80 mm and require the data on a PC, this model is suitable. If you only need to measure up to 80 mm and wish to store the readings in the device, choose the TN 80-0.1US.

Practical tips

With thick walls, the material attenuates the sound more strongly. The rear of the component should be as parallel as possible to the front so that the echo returns clearly. The probe is placed vertically with couplant gel. For reporting purposes, the values can be transferred via RS-232.
