Sauter ultrasonic material thickness gauge TB 200-0.1US, external probe

Product information "Sauter ultrasonic material thickness gauge TB 200-0.1US, external probe"

The Sauter TB 200-0.1US measures the thickness of materials from 1.5 mm to 200 mm. It operates using ultrasound with the pulse-echo method, meaning it only requires access to one side of the component. The probe is connected to the handheld unit via a 0.9 m cable, allowing it to be positioned in places where the unit itself cannot be reached.

Measuring range and sound velocity

The readability is 0.1 mm, with a tolerance of 0.5 % of the maximum value. The sound velocity range extends from 500 to 9,999 m/s. The lower limit of 500 m/s is lower than that of the TN 80-0.1US and the TD 225-0.1US, which start at 1,000 m/s. The probe has a diameter of 8 mm and operates at 5 MHz.

Zero plate and couplant gel

Before taking a measurement, the probe is adjusted against the supplied zero plate. Ultrasonic couplant gel, which is also included in the scope of delivery, is applied between the probe and the workpiece. Additional probes with diameters of 6 mm, 8 mm and 12 mm are available.

Power and housing

The plastic casing measures 161 x 69 x 32 mm; the unit weighs approximately 0.3 kg net. It runs on four AA batteries (1.5 V), which are included in the scope of delivery. The auto-power-off function switches the unit off when not in use. The unit can be switched between mm and inch. In operation, the temperature may be 0 °C to 50 °C; storage is at minus 10 °C to 40 °C.

Typical applications

  • Metalworking and mechanical engineering: checking the thickness of sheet metal, shafts and castings
  • Oil and gas industry: wall thickness of pipes and vessels
  • Shipbuilding: wall thickness of hull plates and tanks
  • Aerospace: thickness of components that are difficult to access
  • Plastics engineering: wall thickness of plastic pipes and containers

The TB 200-0.1US covers thicker components up to 200 mm. Anyone who stays below 80 mm and needs data storage is better served by the TN 80-0.1US. Anyone who wants to reach 225 mm and transfer data via RS-232 should choose the TD 225-0.1US.

Practical guidance

The zero plate should be used at the start of every measurement series. Then place the probe vertically with couplant gel and hold it steady until the value is stable. Rough or rusty surfaces scatter the sound and should be cleaned or smoothed beforehand. The couplant gel can be wiped off the component after the measurement.

Regulatory information

As an electrical device, the device falls under the ElektroG. The manufacturer Kern & Sohn GmbH is registered under the WEEE registration number DE 80821200. How to return old appliances is described on the page Environment and disposal.

Frequently asked questions

How thick can the material be? The measuring range is 1.5 mm to 200 mm in thickness.

What is the zero plate for? It is used to adjust the probe and is supplied with the device.

What batteries does the device require? Four 1.5 V AA batteries. These are included in the scope of delivery.

Does the TB 200-0.1US have a data memory? According to the data sheet, it does not have an internal data memory. If you wish to save readings in the device, choose the TN 80-0.1US.

How long is the warranty? According to Kern & Sohn, this device comes with a 2-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
