The WTW SenTix SP-T 900-X digital IDS pH insertion electrode represents a specialised, electrochemical system solution for the precise and minimally invasive measurement of pH in semi-solid, viscous and plastic media such as meat, sausages, cheese, fruit and dough-like samples. Designed for demanding applications in the food industry, agricultural laboratories and regulatory quality control, this latest-generation digital penetration probe enables error-free signal transmission and comprehensive batch documentation directly to WTW-IDS multi-parameter analysers. When measuring in matrices containing protein, cells and fat, the sensor’s mechanical robustness and resistance to clogging are the primary criteria for reliably preventing distorted measurement results or sluggish response times.

Intelligent IDS sensor technology and digital measurement reliability

The mechatronic system architecture of the SenTix SP-T 900-X is based on pioneering IDS (Intelligent Digital Sensors) technology. The highly sensitive analogue voltage signal from the measuring chain is digitised and calibrated directly within the sensor head. This transient signal processing completely eliminates electromagnetic interference, such as that which can be caused by surrounding production equipment, motors or moisture in slaughterhouses and dairies. The integrated data memory permanently stores the electrode’s specific serial number as well as a precise history of the last 10 calibrations. The automatic sensor evaluation system QSC (Quality Sensor Control) continuously monitors the electrode’s current condition and displays it on the measuring instrument, guaranteeing the highest level of validity at every test stage.

Robust penetration design and clog-resistant polymer electrolyte

The materials-science-based design is uncompromisingly optimised for the mechanical stresses encountered when piercing tough materials. The electrode features an extremely robust, lance-shaped piercing tip made of ultra-high-purity glass, which allows easy penetration into the sample material without causing structural damage to the sensor. A high-viscosity polymer electrolyte, combined with a non-clogging perforated diaphragm, serves as the reference system. This low-maintenance system completely eliminates the need to top up the liquid KCl electrolyte. As no conventional porous diaphragm is used, fats, proteins or fibre structures from foodstuffs cannot block the measuring path, which significantly extends the sensor’s service life in harsh everyday production environments.

Integrated temperature sensing and universal IDS plug-in head

To ensure thermodynamically correct measurement results, the SenTix SP-T 900-X features a built-in 30 kOhm NTC temperature sensor, which is located directly behind the insertion tip and provides automatic, real-time temperature compensation of the pH value. A particular ergonomic highlight of the X variant is the universal IDS plug-in head. The sensor has no fixed cable; instead, it is connected to the measuring instrument either via an AS IDS connection cable or completely wirelessly via a WTW radio module. This offers optimum protection against cable breaks in harsh production environments and ensures uninterrupted, highly flexible handling during the sequential testing of large sample quantities directly on the production line.

To make full use of the WTW SenTix SP-T 900-X’s full range of functions, we recommend operating it with a compatible WTW MultiLine or inoLab IDS meter. For the mechanical connection, we stock the suitable AS IDS-1.5 cable (1.5 metres long) as well as innovative IDS wireless modules for cable-free measurements. For regular recalibration and to ensure the integrity of the metrological chain, we stock certified WTW technical buffer solutions (pH 4.01 and pH 7.00). As protein and fat residues from foodstuffs can build up on the glass membrane over time, we strongly recommend periodic cleaning with genuine WTW pepsin-hydrochloric acid solution to regenerate the membrane, as well as correct storage in KCl storage solution.
