Binder ED 23 Drying and Heating Oven, Avantgarde.Line with natural convection, 20 l, up to 300 °C, 9010-0190

Product information "Binder ED 23 Drying and Heating Oven, Avantgarde.Line with natural convection, 20 l, up to 300 °C, 9010-0190"

Not every drying task in the laboratory requires a lot of space, but reliability is still essential. The Binder ED 23 is the smallest drying and heating cabinet in the Avantgarde.Line ED series, designed with a 20-litre usable volume for the workbench or an adjoining room. Unlike the forced-air models in the FD or FED series, the ED 23 operates using natural convection: heating is achieved solely through the thermal rise of the air inside the chamber, without an active fan. This results in noticeably less air movement than in a forced-air drying oven – an advantage when light or dust-sensitive samples must not be disturbed.

Natural convection instead of forced air circulation: what this means for operation

Without an active fan, the heat inside the chamber takes longer to distribute evenly than in a comparable forced-air unit. With the ED 23, the heating time to 150 °C is around 28 minutes. On the other hand, energy consumption is comparatively low at 148 Wh/h at 150 °C, and the gentle, quiet airflow is well suited to samples that cannot tolerate a draught. The temperature range extends from 5 °C above ambient temperature up to 300 °C – the full range of the Avantgarde.Line – despite its compact design.

Features: APT.line technology and safety class

A controller with timing functions and an adjustable exhaust air flap are included as standard, as is APT.line technology for high temperature accuracy. At 150 °C, the spatial temperature deviation is 2.8 ± K, and the temporal deviation is 0.5 ± K. A Class 2 temperature-selective limiter in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, is already integrated and provides additional process reliability during unattended drying runs.

Typical applications

The ED 23 is suitable for drying and heating applications where space is limited or where recirculating air should be avoided for technical reasons.

  • Drying small quantities of laboratory glassware on a workbench
  • Warm storage of sensitive or lightweight samples without air movement
  • Simple heat treatment in training and routine laboratories
  • Supplement to larger drying ovens for smaller additional batches

With external dimensions of 435 x 520 x 495 mm and a weight of 27 kg, the ED 23 fits easily onto a standard laboratory bench. Two chrome-plated insert grids are included as standard; each insert grid can support up to 12 kg.

Selection guide: choosing the right size from the ED series

With a capacity of 20 litres, the ED 23 is the smallest model in the ED series. Those requiring more internal space but wishing to continue using natural convection will find suitable alternatives in the ED 115 and the larger models, right up to the 743-litre ED 720. The complete range can be found in the LT Laborhandel range of climate cabinets and incubators.

ModelUseful volume, external dimensions (W x D x H), weight
ED 2320 l, 435 x 520 x 495 mm, 27 kg
ED 5657 l, 560 x 565 x 625 mm, 39 kg
ED 115114 l, 710 x 605 x 705 mm, 54 kg
ED 260255 l, 810 x 760 x 940 mm, 85 kg
ED 400400 l, 1,235 x 765 x 1,025 mm, 125 kg
ED 720743 l, 1,165 x 870 x 1,590 mm, 169 kg

For small batches on the workbench, where smooth heating with minimal air movement is paramount, the ED 23 remains the most compact option in the range.

Distinction: natural convection or forced air circulation

Those who would prefer to benefit from an active fan and shorter heating-up times will find the Binder FD 23 drying and heating cabinet – which is the same size – to be the ideal alternative: it reaches 150 °C in around 25 minutes rather than 28. For samples that cannot tolerate any air movement – such as open dishes or fine powders – the ED 23 with natural convection remains the gentler choice.

Frequently asked questions before purchase

Why does it take longer for the ED 23 to heat up than a forced-air unit?
As there is no active fan, the heat is distributed solely by thermal convection, which means that the heating time to 150 °C takes around 28 minutes.

How many rack shelves are included?
Two chrome-plated shelves are included as standard, each with a load capacity of up to 12 kg.

What is the energy consumption of the ED 23?
At 150 °C, energy consumption is 148 Wh/h.

Is the ED 23 also available in a 120 V version?
Yes, a 120 V version is available in addition to the 230 V model.
