Product information "Binder KB 065 refrigerated incubator, 63 l usable volume, temperature range 0 to 70 °C, 9020-0471"
The Binder KB 065 is the most compact refrigerated incubator in the KB series and, with a usable volume of 63 litres and a temperature range of 0 °C to 70 °C, covers a wide range of applications – for example, in a microbiology laboratory where only a few Petri dishes or culture flasks need to be incubated at a constant temperature, but where full control accuracy is still required. Thanks to its stackable design, the KB 065 can be easily integrated into the laboratory even where floor space is limited, for example on top of a second unit of the same model.
Precise cooling with climate-neutral refrigerant R-600a
The KB 065 operates with a modern inverter-controlled refrigeration unit and the climate-neutral refrigerant R-600a. According to the manufacturer, the unit saves up to 40 per cent in energy compared with the previous model. At 37 °C, the spatial temperature deviation is ±0.2 K, whilst the temporal deviation is also ±0.2 K – a level of precision that is crucial for reproducible incubation results. After the door has been open for 30 seconds, the setpoint temperature of 37 °C is reached again after around 3 minutes; the maximum heat compensation is 160 W. Homogeneous temperature distribution inside the chamber is ensured by BINDER’s patented APT.line preheating chamber technology, in which air is channelled into the chamber via the outer walls on both sides.
Typical areas of application
Refrigerated incubators such as the KB 065 are used wherever samples or cultures need to be maintained at a reproducible temperature below or close to room temperature. Typical applications:
- Microbiological incubation of bacterial, yeast and fungal cultures at a defined temperature
- Sterility tests and bacterial count determination in food analysis
- Environmental monitoring and water analysis in pharmaceutical quality control
- Sample storage as a programmable ‘weekend fridge’ when samples need to be kept at a constant cool temperature for a period of time without supervision
- Compact controlled incubation in research and teaching, where only limited floor space is available
Features and operation in everyday laboratory use
The interior of the KB 065 is made entirely of stainless steel; the inner door is made of metal oxide-coated safety glass, allowing visual inspection of the samples without having to open the door. A door heater prevents condensation from forming. Two stainless steel shelf grids are included as standard; a 30 mm diameter feed-through with a silicone plug allows external sensor or measurement cables to be fed through. To ensure process reliability, an independent Class 3.3 temperature selector monitor in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring visual and audible alarms, is integrated. An internal data logger records the measured values and can be read out via the USB interface; an Ethernet interface is also available. A self-test function enables a comprehensive status analysis, and thanks to the simple programming of a second temperature setpoint, the KB 065 can, for example, be automatically switched to a lower holding temperature at the weekend. A hot-air disinfection routine also supports the cleaning of the interior between test runs.
Selection guide: choosing the right model
With six sizes, the KB series covers a wide capacity range, from the compact 65-litre model to the 1,060-litre floor-standing unit. The following overview compares the actual usable volume and external dimensions of all sizes.
| KB 065 | 63 l | 650 x 710 x 905 mm |
| KB 130 | 127 l | 900 x 710 x 1,005 mm |
| KB 260 | 262 l | 930 × 900 × 1,396 mm |
| KB 470 | 472 l | 930 x 900 x 1,951 mm |
| KB 720 | 727 l | 1,285 x 900 x 1,951 mm |
| KB 1060 | 1,070 l | 1,285 x 1,175 x 1,951 mm |
At 63 litres, the KB 065 is the smallest model and is suitable for laboratories with few samples or limited floor space. Should requirements increase, the next step up is the Binder KB 130 refrigerated incubator, which offers just over double the usable volume whilst taking up a similar amount of floor space.
Differences from the neighbouring series
The KB PRO series uses the same compressor technology but extends the temperature range to –20 °C to +100 °C; for larger models such as the KB PRO 260, APT-COM Basic Edition is already included as standard. The KBECO series operates without refrigerant within the same 0 to 70 °C range, limited to 26 to 28 °C below ambient temperature. For temperatures above 70 °C, the smallest KT model, the Binder KT 053 cooling incubator, covers the range from +4 °C to +100 °C.
Frequently asked questions before purchase
Can the KB 065 be combined with a second unit to save space?
Yes, the stackable design allows two KB 065 refrigerated incubators to be stacked on top of one another, thereby doubling the capacity without requiring any additional floor space.
How much energy does the KB 065 save compared to the previous model?
According to the manufacturer, up to 40 per cent, thanks to the modern inverter-driven refrigeration unit using the climate-neutral refrigerant R-600a.
How is the KB 065 protected against unattended overheating?
An independent Class 3.3 temperature selector monitor, compliant with DIN 12880, triggers a visual and audible alarm in the event of deviations.
