Product information "Binder KBF 470 Constant Climate Chamber, 0 °C to 70 °C, 10 % to 80 % rh, 472 l, 9020-0480"
As soon as several test samples need to be stored simultaneously under constant temperature and humidity conditions, a single chamber quickly becomes a bottleneck. With a usable volume of 472 litres, the Binder KBF 470 provides enough space for parallel ICH stability series without reaching the dimensions of a walk-in cabinet. For QC departments running several batches through the stability programme at the same time, this represents a significant increase in capacity compared with more compact models, whilst maintaining the same control accuracy.
The Binder KBF 470 constant climate chamber is part of Binder’s KBF series and is specialised in the combined control of temperature and relative humidity. The unit covers a temperature range from 0 °C to 70 °C; with humidity control, operation is possible from 10 °C to 70 °C at 10 % to 80 % rh. The KBF 470 is thus designed for long-term testing, accelerated testing and stress testing within the scope of ICH Q1A, from control precision and programming through to documentation. With optionally available light modules, the unit can also be used as an ICH photostability test cabinet or as a plant growth cabinet, without the need to purchase a separate unit.
Operation, documentation and process reliability
A touchscreen controller with time-interval and real-time programming handles the control functions, whilst the operator terminal can be adjusted ergonomically. Humidity control is provided by a capacitive humidity sensor with rapid-response steam humidification. Process reliability is ensured by the integrated Class 3.3 adjustable temperature monitor according to DIN 12880, featuring visual and audible alarms, supplemented by a signal triangle with an illuminated status indicator. The unit can be integrated into a network via Ethernet and USB; an internal data logger records measured values in an open format, which can be read directly via USB or using the supplied APT-COM Basic Edition software. Optional software upgrades are available to meet more demanding documentation requirements, extending the functionality of the basic version.
The inner chamber is made of stainless steel; the two inner doors, made of metal oxide-coated safety glass, allow the samples to be viewed without affecting the climatic conditions. Two external and two internal doors, each fitted with a door heater to prevent condensation, together with a robust housing construction featuring HIT sandwich technology, ensure a stable, well-insulated chamber that quickly returns to its set environmental conditions even after frequent door openings. Cooling is provided by a modern inverter chiller using the natural refrigerant R-600a, which, according to the manufacturer’s data sheet, offers up to 40 % lower energy consumption compared with the previous model.
Cost-effectiveness in continuous operation
Constant climate chambers generally run continuously for weeks or months, so energy consumption has a significant impact on running costs. According to the manufacturer’s data sheet, the modern inverter refrigeration technology with a natural refrigerant saves up to 40 % in energy compared with the previous model, without compromising the control accuracy of temperature and humidity. For laboratories with several climate-controlled cabinets operating in parallel, this difference adds up significantly over the service life; furthermore, the natural refrigerant has a lower global warming potential than older refrigerants.
Typical applications
This medium-sized model already allows a noticeably larger sample volume to be processed in parallel, without reaching the dimensions and space requirements of the largest models in the series.
- Concurrent ICH long-term and accelerated tests on multiple batches
- Routine stability testing in QC departments within the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries
- Material testing under defined climatic conditions in quality assurance
- Photostability tests in accordance with ICH Q1B using an optional light module
With optionally available light modules, the Binder KBF 470 can be expanded to include ICH Q1B-compliant photostability tests or LED plant light modules for plant growth experiments, without having to change the base unit. Two stainless steel grid shelves are included as standard; if required, the chamber can be fitted with additional grid shelves, including reinforced ones, up to the maximum number permitted. External water supply systems are also available for humidity control, whilst software documentation upgrades are available up to the GLP Edition.

Additional modules for plant growth, photostability and CO2 gassing

Pictured: size 470 with ICH light module (left) and with LED plant light module (right). The modules are accessories.
The KBF 470 accepts the LED plant light module (8012-2439), the ICH light module (8012-2441) and the CO2 gassing module (8012-2140 or 8012-2138 respectively). With LED light, size 470 reaches a PAR photon flux density of 1,540 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 25 cm, and the temperature and humidity range narrows to 10 °C to 50 °C and 20 to 50 % relative humidity. With the ICH module, VIS illuminance is 38 klx and UVA irradiance is 37 W/m², an ICH Q1B test is completed in 38 hours, usable at 20 °C to 50 °C and 20 to 50 % relative humidity. The CO2 module operates in the range of 0 °C to 70 °C and 20 to 80 % relative humidity. Matching grid shelves with U-rails for the LED strips have item number 8012-2390.
The modules are accessories and not included with the chamber. You will find them with prices under "Matching modules" on this page; more on our Binder page.
