Product information "Binder KBF PRO 470 Constant-Climate Chamber, −20 °C to +100 °C, 10 % to 98 % RH, 472 l, 9020-0441"
As sample volumes increase, the extended control range of the PRO series is often the decisive factor, for example when freeze-thaw cycles or high-temperature profiles form part of the test programme. The Binder KBF PRO 470 combines a 472-litre usable volume with a temperature range of −20 °C to +100 °C and a relative humidity of up to 98 per cent. This allows temperature-sensitive products to be tested across the entire cold chain without having to switch the chamber between cold and hot phases.
The Binder KBF PRO 470 constant climate chamber is part of Binder’s KBF PRO series and is specialised in the combined control of temperature and relative humidity. The extended temperature range from −20 °C to +100 °C, together with humidity control from 10 °C to 90 °C at 10 % to 98 % RH, significantly exceeds the standard range of the KBF series. This means that, in addition to standard ICH stability profiles, the KBF PRO 470 can also handle all kinds of material testing, for example at temperatures close to freezing point or under THB (Temperature Humidity Bias) conditions at +85 °C and 85 per cent relative humidity. Here too, the unit can be used with optional light modules as an ICH photostability test chamber or as a plant growth chamber.
Operation, documentation and process reliability
A touchscreen controller with time-interval and real-time programming handles the control functions; the operator terminal can be adjusted ergonomically. Humidity control is provided by a capacitive humidity sensor with rapid-response steam humidification. Process reliability is ensured by the integrated Class 3.3 temperature selector monitor in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring visual and audible alarms, supplemented by a signal triangle with an illuminated status indicator. The unit can be integrated into a network via Ethernet and USB; an internal data logger records measurement values in an open format, which can be read directly via USB or using the supplied APT-COM Basic Edition software. Optional software upgrades are available to meet more demanding documentation requirements, extending the range of functions of the basic version.
The inner chamber is made of stainless steel; the two inner doors, made of metal oxide-coated safety glass, allow the samples to be viewed without affecting the climatic conditions. Two external and two internal doors, each fitted with a door heater to prevent condensation, together with a robust housing design featuring HIT sandwich technology, ensure a stable, well-insulated chamber that quickly returns to its set climatic conditions even after frequent door openings. Cooling is provided by a modern inverter chiller using the climate-neutral refrigerant R-290, which, according to the manufacturer’s data sheet, offers up to 40 per cent lower energy consumption compared with the previous model.
Cost-effectiveness and sustainability in continuous operation
Constant-climate cabinets typically run continuously for weeks or months, so energy consumption has a correspondingly significant impact on running costs. According to the manufacturer’s data sheet, the modern inverter refrigeration technology with a climate-neutral refrigerant saves up to 40 per cent in energy compared with the previous model, without compromising the control accuracy of temperature and humidity. For laboratories with several climate-controlled cabinets operating in parallel, this difference adds up significantly over the service life; furthermore, the climate-neutral refrigerant reduces the environmental impact compared with older refrigerants.
Typical applications
This size allows for more extensive test programmes involving several batches running in parallel, as is common in quality assurance departments with a regular throughput of samples.
- Freeze-thaw cycles and cold chain simulation for biologics and temperature-sensitive products
- THB material testing for electronics, automotive and materials qualification
- Parallel ICH stability series with capacity for special tests outside the standard range
- Photostability and plant growth tests with an optional light module
With optionally available light modules, the Binder KBF PRO 470 can be expanded to include ICH Q1B-compliant photostability tests or LED plant light modules for plant growth trials, without having to change the base unit. Two stainless steel insert racks are included as standard; if required, the chamber can be fitted with additional insert racks, including reinforced ones, up to the maximum number of racks. External water supply systems are also available for humidity control, whilst software documentation upgrades are available up to the GLP Edition.

Pictured: size 470 with ICH light module (left, KBF PRO 470) and with LED plant light module (right). The modules are accessories.
Three retrofit options are available for the KBF PRO 470 with the LED plant light module (8012-2439), the ICH light module (8012-2441) and the CO2 gassing module (8012-2140 or 8012-2138 respectively). In light operation with the LED module, the PAR photon flux density is 1,540 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 25 cm, and temperature and humidity are reduced to −10 °C to +60 °C and 10 to 90 per cent relative humidity. The ICH module reaches 38 klx VIS illuminance and 37 W/m² UVA irradiance, a complete ICH Q1B test takes 38 hours, usable at 10 °C to 50 °C and 10 to 80 per cent relative humidity. The shelf set with U-rails for the LED strips carries item number 8012-2390; all three modules are fitted on site.
The modules are accessories and not included with the chamber. You will find them with prices under "Matching modules" on this page; more on our Binder page.
