When carrying out acid digestion of smaller sample volumes, 1 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid is often added initially; for larger batches, a greater volume may be added in the same step. The Brand Dispensette S Organic Digital covers this range, from 1 to 10 ml, in a single device. For volumes of 1-10 ml, the graduation is 0.05 ml, the accuracy is 0.5 %/50 µl, and the coefficient of variation is 0.1 %/10 µl.

The colour code ‘Yellow’ identifies the Organic series within the Brand range. For volumes of 1-10 ml, typical applications in practice include:

• Addition of approximately 1 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid during the acid digestion of small sample quantities
• Dosing of dichloromethane during liquid-liquid extraction
• Addition of varying quantities of THF during reaction optimisation in synthesis

Digital version and selection guide

The volume is set using the volume adjustment wheel with a mechanical counter and can be quickly readjusted between individual dosing steps. Digital devices can be adjusted without tools using Easy Calibration. Suitable bottle adaptors for GL 24-25, GL 28/S 28, GL 32-33, GL 38 and S 40 are included; the suction tube can be adjusted to 125-240 mm.

If the volume is changed between several values in the range of 1 to 10 ml within a digestion protocol, the counter on the digital version clearly displays the current value. If, on the other hand, the same volume of hydrochloric acid is always used, the simpler analogue version is sufficient.

Materials and autoclavability

Parts in contact with the medium are made of borosilicate glass, Al2O3 ceramic, ETFE, FEP, PFA, PTFE, tantalum and PP (screw cap/bottle adapter). The device is autoclavable under the following conditions: 121 °C, 2 bar, for at least 15 minutes according to DIN EN 285, with a cooling time of approx. 2 hours in a closed autoclave. The use of tantalum as the valve spring material, together with the fluoroplastics ETFE, FEP, PFA and PTFE, makes the Organic series suitable for use with organic solvents and certain concentrated acids; however, it is not suitable for alkalis or salt solutions.

The Dispensette S Organic is not suitable for alkalis, salt solutions, carbon disulphide, explosive liquids or media that attack borosilicate glass, such as hydrofluoric acid. For alkalis and salt solutions, the Dispensette S in red (standard) is the suitable series; for trace analysis with a selectable valve spring made of platinum-iridium or tantalum, the Dispensette S Trace Analysis is recommended.

Installation and switching to a different supply bottle are carried out using the supplied mounting key and the telescopic suction tube, which can be adjusted to the height of the respective bottle. The bottle adapter included in the scope of delivery fits the relevant GL45-compatible thread, allowing the dispenser to be used regardless of the specific storage bottle.

Accuracy at a glance

Can this model be retrofitted with a recirculation valve?
According to the manufacturer, the version with a recirculation valve has its own order number and comes with its own discharge tube including a recirculation tube; it is not a retrofit option for the version without a recirculation valve.

How is the digital version adjusted in the 1-10 ml range?
With Easy Calibration, this can be done without any additional tools; a changed factory adjustment is indicated by a red marking.

Distinction within the Dispensette S family

The choice between red and yellow depends solely on the medium: Organic (yellow) is suitable for the organic solvents described here and for concentrated hydrochloric acid/nitric acid, whilst the standard version (red) is suitable for alkalis and most other acids.
