Bürkle All-layer Scratcher Sampling Lance, V4A stainless steel/PTFE, 900 mm penetration depth, 5351-1000

Product information "Bürkle All-layer Scratcher Sampling Lance, V4A stainless steel/PTFE, 900 mm penetration depth, 5351-1000"

Powders and granules that clump together cannot simply be sucked up or allowed to flow into an open chamber in the same way as free-flowing bulk material; the material must be actively dislodged from the wall. A simple sampling spear would tend to slide along such material rather than penetrate it. The Bürkle all-layer scratcher does exactly that: as it rotates, a scraping edge detaches the material from the inner wall of the container and directs it into a sealable inner tube, free from contamination and without coming into contact with layers it has already passed through.

Three collection ports for separate zones

The all-layer scratcher has three collection ports; the first begins at 60 millimetres. According to the Bürkle data sheet, the chamber length is 282 millimetres, the chamber width 12 millimetres and the chamber spacing 13 millimetres. Sliding PTFE separators separate these zones from one another and prevent material from different layers from mixing within the sample. This makes the all-layer scratcher a multi-target sampler that captures multiple depths in a single operation, rather than requiring a separate penetration for each zone. Because the separators can be adjusted, the zoning adapts to different container heights and layer thicknesses, rather than being fixed to a single container format.

180 millilitres of sample volume from three zones

In total, the device holds 180 millilitres of sample material, with a total length of 1,092 millimetres, a tube diameter of 25 millimetres and an outer diameter of 32 millimetres. This capacity is significantly greater than that of tools designed for very small quantities of powder, such as the PharmaPicker, and is suitable for larger sample volumes where each layer is still to be analysed separately. Distributed across the three chambers, this also allows a composite sample to be formed across the entire penetration depth if separate analysis is not required in individual cases.

Two additional handles, can be completely dismantled

Two additional handles facilitate the safe insertion, securing and rotation of the lance within the container; particularly at a penetration depth of 900 millimetres, this offers a noticeable improvement over a single-handle design. For cleaning between two batches, the sampler can be completely dismantled, allowing even the PTFE separators and the inner tube to be cleaned individually. With sticky or caking materials, this ability to be fully dismantled is crucial, as residues could otherwise become trapped in the spaces between the separators.

Materials for contact with powders and granules

The parts in contact with the media are made of V4A stainless steel (1.4404, AISI 316L) and PTFE for the separators. This combination withstands caking, sometimes sticky powders as well as the mechanical stress caused by rotation and removal from the container. PTFE also has very low adhesion properties, which makes it easier to move the separators and remove adhering material during cleaning.

Differences from other Bürkle samplers

For free-flowing bulk materials that flow freely around the device and do not require a scraping edge to dislodge them, the SiloPicker is the simpler and lighter option. If, instead of a multi-target sample, continuous sampling across several fixed stages is required, the Multi Sampler multi-stage sampler is an alternative with a different chamber design. For even larger sample volumes from multiple zones, we also offer the Jumbo Sampler Zone Sampler Multi.

Typical applications

  • Sampling of caking powders and granules that do not free-flow
  • Sampling of separate layers at multiple depths in a single operation
  • Quality control for materials with varying properties across the height of the container
  • Sampling of larger volumes, where each zone is to be analysed individually
  • Analysis of stored material that tends to vary in consistency across the height of the container

Service and procurement

We can, if required, put together a selection of multiple scraper samplers for parallel workstations or suitable supplementary equipment from the Bürkle sampling range, including in combination with other samplers for different materials at the same site. If you have any questions about choosing between a all-layer scratcher, SiloPicker or Multi Sampler, please contact us directly for assistance.
