Grain, animal feed or chemical powders stored in a silo for months change to varying degrees depending on their depth. Moisture sinks to the bottom, heat builds up in the centre, and pest infestation often starts in one spot and only spreads later. The SiloPicker from Bürkle penetrates up to 1,200 millimetres deep into a silo or other storage container and extracts the material specifically from this depth, rather than merely taking samples from the surface. A surface sample alone would not reveal these differences between the layers at all.
1,200 millimetres penetration depth, two collection ports
With a total length of 1,300 millimetres and an external diameter of 50 millimetres, the SiloPicker reaches significantly deeper into a container than the shorter Bürkle samplers designed for drums and cartons. Two collection ports together hold 100 millilitres of sample material; the collection chamber begins at a penetration depth of 143 millimetres. This design makes the device a targeted sampler that collects specifically from a particular layer rather than across the entire penetration depth, which distinguishes it from a continuous lance.
For free-flowing bulk materials
The SiloPicker is designed for free-flowing materials that flow freely around the device, such as cereal grains, pellets or fine-grained chemical powders. With materials that cake or clump together – and which tend to compact rather than be displaced during penetration – this design reaches its limits; in such cases, a device with an actively scraping opening is the better choice. It is therefore worth taking a quick look at the flow properties of the stored material before first use.
Representative sampling across multiple target points
As with any single-point sampler, a single penetration captures data from just one position in the silo. To obtain a reliable picture of the entire stock, multiple penetrations are required at different locations and depths; taken together, the results provide a comprehensive view of the material’s distribution. The 100-millilitre sample volume per penetration is sufficient for most routine analyses, without the need for a separate device for each position.
Material for continuous use
The device is manufactured from V4A stainless steel (1.4404, AISI 316L), which withstands the frequent mechanical stress of sampling and cleaning between batches without corrosion. The material is certified for food contact in accordance with EU Regulation 1935/2004, making it suitable for use in grain and feed silos. With a total length of 1.3 metres and the corresponding lever required for sampling, the stability of V4A offers additional benefits compared to lighter materials.

For deeper silos or other zones
