Product information "Bürkle ViscoSampler sampler for viscous substances, PP, 60 cm immersion depth, 160 ml, 5331-1060"
Anyone taking a sludge sample from a settling tank two metres deep won’t get very far with a simple beaker: the medium is too viscous to be collected cleanly, and contact with the previous sample will skew the result. The ViscoSampler PP extracts such samples from deep within using a suction piston, without the user having to reach into the medium themselves. The polypropylene range, with three lengths offering immersion depths from 60 to 200 cm, covers tanks and basins of varying depths.
Suction piston instead of scooping
The ViscoSampler works like a large pipette. The tube is inserted into the medium to the desired depth; the piston draws in the sample and holds it in the tube until it is expelled at the destination. Surfaces are manufactured to be non-porous and free of undercuts; a round thread replaces the usual tapered thread, thereby reducing the number of places where dirt can accumulate. The sampler can be completely dismantled for cleaning.
Three lengths, three sample volumes
The shortest version, with a 60 cm immersion depth, holds 160 ml and is suitable for shallow containers or basins with an easily accessible surface. The medium length of 100 cm holds 300 ml, whilst the longest version, with a 200 cm immersion depth, holds 650 ml and can also reach the bottom of deeper tanks or settling tanks. Anyone who regularly takes samples from containers of varying depths can select the appropriate length for each task, rather than having to switch between a single version that is either too short or too unwieldy.
Material and seals
The tube and piston are made of polypropylene, whilst the seals are made of PTFE. A Declaration of Conformity for the PTFE seals is available in accordance with EU Regulation 1935/2004, EU Regulation 10/2011 and the GMP Regulation (EC) 2023/2006. It specifies concrete migration limit values for the PTFE components used, including for tetrafluoroethene and perfluoropropylperfluorovinyl ether, and thus confirms their suitability for contact with the tested media. Bürkle also provides a general material declaration for the plastic parts made of PP, PTFE and FEP across the entire ViscoSampler range.
When the PP version is the right choice
For most viscous media such as slurries, silt or oils, polypropylene is a suitable material. For more aggressive chemicals, the ViscoSampler version made from PTFE/FEP offers greater chemical resistance. For smaller sample volumes of up to 75 ml, the Mini ViscoSampler made from V4A stainless steel is the more compact alternative. If the samples are not slurries or liquids but solid soil samples, the GeoSampler or the Pürckhauer are more suitable.
Cleaning between two sampling operations
As the ViscoSampler can be completely dismantled, each individual part can be cleaned separately between sampling operations. This is important whenever samples are taken consecutively from different batches or containers: residues from the previous sample in the tube or on the piston would otherwise contaminate the next sample. The non-porous, undercut-free surface further facilitates this residue-free cleaning, as viscous material adheres less to smooth surfaces than to edges or crevices.
Typical applications
- Sludge and silt from clarifiers and settling tanks
- Aqueous clay and soil samples
- Sediment from tanks and containers
- Oils and emulsions
- Creams and other paste-like products

Service and procurement
The appropriate length and sample volume for a particular application depend on the depth of the container and the required sample quantity. For deep tanks or settling tanks, it is worth considering the 200 cm version, even though in everyday use only the upper layers are usually sampled, as this avoids the need for a second order later on for special cases. LT Laborhandel stocks each of the three ViscoSampler PP lengths individually and, if required, can also advise on the choice between the PP and PTFE/FEP versions. If you have any queries regarding the appropriate size or the combination of several samplers for different media, please contact LT Laborhandel for assistance.
