In industrial process development, the demanding production of paints and coatings, chemical synthesis and in pilot plants for food technology, the efficient and homogeneous incorporation of solids into liquid media is an absolutely critical process step. When fine powders, highly binding pigments, high-molecular-weight polymeric thickeners or viscous resins are introduced into large volumes of liquid, stubborn agglomerates – known as ‘fish eyes’ – inevitably form. In these lumps, only the outer layer is wetted, whilst the inner core remains dry and physically isolated. Conventional propeller or anchor agitators are completely inadequate for these volumes, as they merely circulate the medium without applying the local shear forces required to mechanically break up these agglomerates. The disastrous consequences are extremely prolonged process times, defective batches, blocked filter systems and reduced product quality. The physics of comminution: the dissolver principle on a large scale

The technological heart of the IKA D 60 is its precisely engineered and dynamically balanced dissolver disc (toothed disc), which boasts an impressive diameter of 60 millimetres. Unlike conventional stirrers, which are primarily designed for purely axial circulation, this large dissolver head generates immense local shear and impact forces at the extremely high speeds of an industrial disperser. The sharp teeth on the outer edge of the solid metal disc, which are alternately curved upwards and downwards, cut mercilessly through the liquid – often highly viscous – medium at high speed. Extreme hydrodynamic turbulence and cavitation forces arise at the edges of these teeth. The viscous powder-liquid mixture is accelerated radially outwards with immense kinetic energy by the disc’s fluid dynamic profile, strikes the reactor or vessel wall, and circulates continuously back into the high-shear zone at the agitator shaft. This raw yet precisely controlled mechanical force literally tears the stubborn agglomerate structures apart into their finest primary particles.

An outstanding feature of the D 60 Dissolver is its precise design for pilot and small-scale production. With a specified, extremely wide operating range from 2 litres up to a massive 30 litres (based on the physical viscosity of water), this instrument bridges the gap perfectly between the pure laboratory environment and industrial production. Once you have successfully developed a new formulation on a 500-ml scale, scale-up is often the most critical step. With the D 60 tool, you can scale this process seamlessly and reproducibly to 30-litre pilot batches. You generate reliable, meaningful process data for subsequent large-scale production without having to compromise on dispersion quality or particle size distribution.

Seamless system integration: Tailor-made for the T 65 digital

As an original IKA accessory, the IKA D 60 dissolver is not a universal stand-alone product, but a highly specialised mixing head that integrates perfectly into the existing high-end ecosystem. It has been designed exclusively for use in combination with the extremely powerful IKA T 65 digital industrial disperser. To safely and vibration-free transfer the massive torsional forces generated at high volumes and speeds from the motor to the dissolver disc, the D 60 mixing head is coupled to the robust IKA dispersing shafts. It is fully compatible with all shafts in the S 65 series. This modular design offers you the enormous economic advantage of being able to use different tool heads (such as rotor-stator generators for emulsions or this very dissolver for agglomerates) with the same expensive T 65 drive motor, which massively increases the flexibility (Total Cost of Ownership) of your pilot plant.

Uncompromising material quality and GLP/GMP compliance

In tough, continuous industrial use with highly abrasive pigments, ceramic powders, harsh chemical solvents or aggressive surfactants, an agitation tool must be extremely durable. The IKA D 60 Dissolver is therefore manufactured entirely from high-quality, corrosion-resistant AISI 316L grade stainless steel. This premium material not only ensures an outstanding service life for the agitator, even when handling abrasive media, but also minimises unwanted metallic abrasion (contamination) in sensitive samples – a factor of the utmost importance for pharmaceutical quality control and the semiconductor industry. The flow-optimised design of the 60-mm toothed disc prevents stubborn build-up of product residues in dead corners. Once the intensive dispersion process is complete, the tool can be easily cleaned without leaving any residue under running water, in an industrial ultrasonic bath or with suitable solvents. This is absolutely essential in strictly regulated quality management systems (such as GMP or GLP) to completely rule out dangerous cross-contamination (carry-over) between different large production batches.
