IKA LR-2.ST the Compact Power Laboratory Reactor, 500 to 2000 ml, up to 50,000 mPas, 20013294

Product information "IKA LR-2.ST the Compact Power Laboratory Reactor, 500 to 2000 ml, up to 50,000 mPas, 20013294"

High-viscosity media such as gels, pastes, melts or concentrated polymer solutions can hardly be mixed reliably with classic magnetic stirrers. The IKA LR-2.ST the Compact Power laboratory reactor (MPN 20013294) is the most compact and most affordable version of the LR-2.ST reactor platform and processes media with a viscosity of up to 50,000 mPas at a working volume of 500 to 2000 millilitres. This laboratory reactor is therefore suitable for laboratories that need reliable stirring, mixing and homogenising processes at medium to high viscosity without investing straight away in the more powerful configurations of the series. As a modularly configured reactor platform, it is designed for reproducibility, an important criterion when a recipe is later to be produced on a larger scale.

Microprocessor-controlled stirrer with torque trend display

The LR-2.SI stand system carries the supplied EUROSTAR 60 control laboratory stirrer, which covers a speed range of 8 to 290 revolutions per minute continuously and provides a maximum torque of 60 Ncm at the stirring shaft. The microprocessor-controlled regulation keeps the set speed constant even as the load increases, while the integrated torque trend display makes changes in viscosity in the stirred material visible, for example when a gel forms during a reaction or a solid dissolves.

Borosilicate glass reactor vessel for vacuum and temperature changes

The 2.0-litre borosilicate glass reactor vessel is designed for a working volume of 500 to 2000 millilitres and operates in a temperature range from room temperature to 230 degrees Celsius at an achievable vacuum of 25 mbar. The LR2.10 reactor lid offers three openings in standard ground joint NS 29/32 and two openings in standard ground joint NS 14/23, through which temperature probes, reflux condensers or further accessories can be introduced gas-tight. Seals made of FFPM (perfluoroelastomer) ensure that even aggressive solvents and the full temperature span of the system have no effect on tightness.

Compact format for set-up in the fume hood

With dimensions of 460 x 1240 x 430 millimetres, a telescopic foot stroke of 390 millimetres and a weight of around 25 kilograms, the Compact Power can also be set up in fume hoods with limited space. The detachable wireless control unit (WiCo) makes it possible to monitor and control the speed and stirring process from outside the fume hood, so users do not have to stand directly at the device when stirring hazardous or volatile media. Permissible ambient temperatures are 5 to 40 degrees Celsius at a relative humidity of a maximum of 80 per cent.

Expandable via the free lid openings

The five openings in total in the reactor lid are not reserved only for temperature probes. Depending on the experimental set-up, dispersing tools, reflux condensers, dropping funnels or gas inlet and outlet lines can also be introduced through the standard ground joints. The Compact Power therefore remains usable even when an experiment requires additional sensors or a continuous gas atmosphere in the course of the project, without a completely new reactor set-up being necessary.

Entry to the LR-2.ST platform without compromises in process safety

The Compact Power shares the stand system, the reactor vessel and the safety equipment with the more powerful LR-2.ST versions the Versatile, the Allrounder and the High-Performer, which are designed for higher viscosities of up to 70,000, 100,000 and 150,000 mPas respectively. If it is foreseeable that future batches will consistently stay within the range up to 50,000 mPas, this basic version saves money compared with the higher torque levels of the series, without having to compromise on glass quality, vacuum resistance or operating concept. The Compact Power can thus be understood as a solid entry-level platform into the world of high-viscosity reactors, which can be scaled up within the same series as requirements grow, without having to learn a new stand system or operating logic.

Typical applications

The LR-2.ST the Compact Power is used wherever medium-viscosity to viscous media must be stirred or mixed in a controlled way on a laboratory scale:

  • Homogenising creams, gels and emulsions in cosmetics development
  • Stirring and temperature-controlling viscous formulations in pharmaceutical development
  • Chemical syntheses with rising viscosity during the reaction, for example in polymerisations
  • Vacuum-assisted degassing of solutions and dispersions before further processing
  • Scale-up preliminary trials on a laboratory scale before a process is transferred to larger production reactors
  • Formulation development in which recipes with different final viscosities are compared
  • Practical courses and further training in which students or new employees learn how to handle reactor systems

Maximum efficiency in dissolution and deagglomeration: the IKA S 25 KV - 26 LR dissolver The IKA S 25 KV - 26 LR dissolver (MPN 0020015397) represents the very pinnacle of modern mixing and dispersion technology for demanding laboratory reactor systems. In many industrial and research sectors – be it in chemical synthesis, cosmetics development, paint production or food technology – users face the significant daily challenge of homogeneously incorporating fine powders, highly cohesive solids or sticky pigments into liquid media. Very often, stubborn agglomerates form when these solids are stirred in. These disruptive clumps of particles are simply moved in circles by conventional agitators such as propeller, paddle or anchor agitators, but are not effectively broken up mechanically. The result is incomplete reactions, poor textures or significantly prolonged process times. This high-speed dissolver was designed precisely for these critical and energy-intensive process steps. It delivers uncompromising performance in intensive mixing, dissolution and deagglomeration to ensure homogeneous, completely lump-free dispersions in the shortest possible time. The aerodynamic dissolver principle In direct comparison to a conventional rotor-stator dispersing tool, in which the medium is forced through a very narrow, defined gap between two components, the S 25 KV - 26 LR model utilises a specially serrated dissolver disc with a diameter of 26 millimetres. This solid metal disc rotates freely at extremely high speeds (high speed) within the liquid medium. The sharp teeth on the edge of the disc, which are alternately curved upwards and downwards, generate immense local shear forces and strong turbulence. The rotation accelerates the liquid radially outwards with great force, which simultaneously creates an enormous axial suction effect (vortex formation) at the centre. This intelligent flow pattern draws the floating or agglomerated powder particles from the liquid surface directly downwards towards the rotating toothed disc. There, they are literally shattered by the high kinetic energy of the teeth and broken down into their fine primary particles. In process engineering, this principle is the absolute gold standard method for the rapid incorporation of poorly wettable thickeners, colour pigments or high-molecular-weight polymers into aqueous or highly solvent-based systems. Vacuum and pressure tightness (the ‘KV’ seal) Another outstanding feature of this stirring tool, which is indispensable for many applications, is indicated by the specific abbreviation ‘KV’. In IKA products, this stands for a high-quality ball bearing system combined with a special sealing technology that makes the tool absolutely vacuum- and pressure-tight (up to the respective system-specific limits of the laboratory reactors). When working professionally with state-of-the-art laboratory reactors such as the IKA LR 1000 control System or the versatile LR-2.ST series, this leak-tightness is of fundamental importance. Sensitive chemical reactions or the production of high-purity cosmetics and emulsions often require the strict exclusion of oxygen. Users must work under a protective inert gas atmosphere or specifically degas the sample under vacuum to avoid disruptive air pockets in pasty, viscous media. A conventional, open dispersing tool would cause the reactor chamber to leak under these extreme conditions and ruin the process. The S 25 KV - 26 LR dissolver agitator, on the other hand, seals the reactor opening absolutely securely via the flange. This allows you to deagglomerate your samples at full high-speed rotation whilst a strong vacuum is maintained inside the vessel – an enormous technological advantage for process quality. Material quality, hygiene and compatibility As this dissolver stirrer is designed for direct, continuous contact with aggressive chemicals, highly abrasive pigments and reactive media, all parts in contact with the media (including the dissolver disc and the shaft) are made from high-quality, chemically extremely resistant AISI 316L stainless steel. This industrially proven material not only guarantees outstanding resistance to most organic solvents, acids and alkalis, but can also be cleaned safely and thoroughly after use, leaving no residue. Thanks to its robust construction, the unit is ideally suited to the rigours of everyday laboratory use. As an original accessory, the S 25 KV - 26 LR is precisely matched to IKA’s reactor platforms. It is fully compatible with the T 25 digital LR disperser, the LR 1000 systems (basic and control) and the entire LR-2.ST series (including Allrounder, High Performer and Starvisc). Investing in this highly specialised tool massively increases the efficiency of your laboratory processes, significantly reduces mixing times and decisively optimises the quality of your end products.
