The speed at which the IKA MS 3 control (0020016017) shakes depends on the attachment. The unit recognises the attachment fitted and limits the speed accordingly when operating in safety mode. The small shaker operates in a circular motion with a 4.5 mm stroke at speeds between 100 and 3,000 rpm, can hold up to 0.5 kg including the attachment, and is designed for small vessels and microtitre plates.
Two operating modes: with and without attachment recognition
In Mode A, the safety-controlled mode with attachment detection, the device reaches the maximum speed of 3,000 rpm only with the standard attachment in touch mode. With the other attachments, the speed is limited to 1,300 rpm. In Mode B, without attachment detection, a speed of 3,000 rpm can be achieved with all attachments depending on the application; the permitted combinations are listed in the accessories section of the operating instructions.
Speed, timer and display
Speed and time are displayed on an LCD. The speed deviation is 1 per cent. The timer counts down from 1 second to 3,599 minutes; the deviation of the unit’s clock is no more than 1 per cent. Options include timer mode, continuous operation and touch mode in conjunction with the standard attachment. The permissible duty cycle is 100 per cent. The housing is made of die-cast zinc; it measures 148 x 63 x 205 mm and weighs 3.16 kg. The unit features an RS-232 interface for control; IKA also specifies a USB port for remote operation.

The Vortex 3 has no display, but features a 4 mm stroke and attachments for, amongst other things, tubes, microtitre plates and 250 ml Erlenmeyer flasks. The lab dancer operates at a fixed speed of 2,800 rpm in touch mode only. The VXR basic can handle 2 kg and runs at up to 2,200 rpm.
