IKA MS 3 digital Orbital Shaker, up to 3,000 rpm, 4.5 mm Stroke, Microtitre Attachment, 0003319000

The MS 3 digital (MPN 0003319000) is a compact orbital shaker for small vessels and microtitre plates. It measures 148 x 63 x 205 mm, weighs 2.9 kg and, with the standard attachment in touch operation, reaches up to 3,000 rpm at a 4.5 mm shaking stroke. The scope of delivery includes five attachments and inserts, among them a test tube insert, a one-hand insert and a microtitre attachment. The difference from overhead mixing is shown by the Trayster digital, which turns samples in tubes over the head.

Two operating modes and the speed limits

The MS 3 digital works in mode A with attachment detection and in mode B without. In mode A the device detects the attachment fitted and limits the speed accordingly: except for the standard attachment it is 1,300 rpm. The maximum speed of 3,000 rpm is available in mode A only with the standard attachment in touch operation. In mode B, 3,000 rpm can be reached with all attachments, depending on the application. The lowest adjustable speed is 200 rpm, and the speed is set on a scale.

Touch operation, continuous operation and timer

Touch operation is possible in conjunction with the standard attachment. Alternatively, continuous operation and a timer with countdown are available, adjustable from 1 s to 999 min with display on a 7-segment LED. The duty cycle is specified as 100 %. The motor draws 10 W and delivers 8 W.

Attachments, load and housing

The shaking weight, including attachment, may be 0.5 kg. One microtitre plate can be processed on the MS 3.4 microtitre attachment. The housing is made of die-cast zinc, and the device stands securely at all speed ranges. Attachments beyond the scope of delivery are available in a wide selection.

Power supply and installation

The device is supplied via a power supply unit for 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz and operates at 24 V= with a current consumption of 800 mA, and the power consumption is 20 W. Ambient temperatures of 5 to 40 °C at up to 80 % relative humidity are permissible, and the protection class is IP 21. At 148 mm wide and 205 mm deep, the MS 3 digital needs little space. The shaking weight of 0.5 kg includes the attachment, which has to be factored in when planning vessels and fill quantities.

Selection guide

The MS 3 digital is the right choice if small vessels or a single microtitre plate are to be shaken in an orbital motion and the speed has to be adjustable between 200 and 3,000 rpm. For the maximum speed, the combination of attachment and mode counts: 3,000 rpm with the standard attachment in touch operation, and at most 1,300 rpm with the other attachments in mode A. Comparison with other IKA shakers

If you want to mix tubes up to 50 ml by a rotary motion, you will find this in the Trayster digital at 5 to 80 rpm, and the variant with a fixed speed of 20 rpm is the Trayster basic. The MS 3 digital, by contrast, covers orbital shaking of small vessels at high speeds.
