IKA MT 40 P.10 disposable grinding cup, interlocking beater, 40 ml, 10 pieces, 0020017838

Product information "IKA MT 40 P.10 disposable grinding cup, interlocking beater, 40 ml, 10 pieces, 0020017838"

Kinematic behaviour of the interlocking rotor and shear comminution

In analytical sample preparation, soft, tough, elastic or extremely fibrous matrices (such as plant tissue, plastics, paper or textiles) present a major process engineering challenge. Conventional impact beaters fail physically in this context, as elastic materials absorb the kinetic impact energy through damping effects rather than fracturing in a brittle manner. The IKA MT 40 P single-use grinding cup is equipped with a specifically interlaced (curved) stainless steel beater to solve this rheological problem. Driven by the IKA Tube Mill’s magnetic coupling at speeds of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, this modified rotor geometry not only applies radial impact energy but also induces massive, localised shear stresses. This shearing action continuously breaks down the macromolecular fibre structures and effectively prevents plastic deformation of the sample.

Macro-fluid dynamics and prevention of wrapping effects

A fundamental mechanical problem in the high-speed grinding of long fibres is the so-called winding effect. Under conditions of severe flow turbulence, fibrous materials tend to wind statically around the rotating tool shaft. This leads to an exponential increase in torsional resistance and thermal overload of the system. The asymmetrical, interlocking geometry of the P-beater acts as a hydrodynamic impeller. It generates massive three-dimensional flow turbulence (vortex), which presses the material radially against the chamber wall and cuts the fibres to pieces long before static wrapping structures can form around the axis of rotation. This promotes a homogeneous particle size distribution within the 40-ml batch without any dead zones in the flow.

Aerosol containment and elimination of carry-over

The high-speed comminution induces significant thermodynamic stress through wall collisions. The MT 40 P grinding cups are manufactured from high-performance thermoplastic polymers that absorb this exothermic heat and the mechanical impacts without fracturing. When grinding toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), the closed cup acts as a hermetically sealed containment system. It physically protects the user from inhaling respirable aerosols. The ‘single-use’ concept also completely eliminates analytical cross-contamination (carry-over) between consecutive batches at the molecular level, as it eliminates the need for the time-consuming decontamination of conventional grinding chambers.

Individual requirements & accessories

The MT 40 P.10 grinding cups are highly specialised consumables and function exclusively in combination with the IKA Tube Mill drive system. Selecting the correct cup for your specific process is essential: for classic, hard and brittle solids (such as rock), always use the standard MT 40 cup (straight beater). Switch to the MT 40 P version with an interlocking beater shown here only when processing elastic, tough or fibrous samples (such as leaves, rubber or textiles) to ensure optimum thermodynamic and kinematic efficiency. Please contact our procurement service at any time for strategic requirements planning.

To grind small, dry samples whilst preventing any cross-contamination between batches: that is what the IKA Tube Mill control is designed for. The batch mill operates with a patented disposable grinding cup with a volume of up to 40 ml, achieves a speed of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute and is specifically designed for hard, brittle materials such as seeds. After grinding, the cup is not cleaned but replaced with a new one, which saves time between samples and eliminates the risk of carry-over. For laboratories that process many small batches in succession, for example, in seed testing, this is precisely what makes the difference to their daily workflow.Disposable grinding cup with safety featuresThe supplied MT 40 has a maximum capacity of 40 ml of sample material and is designed to process hard, brittle and dry materials up to Mohs hardness 5 with a maximum feed particle size of 10 mm. The grinding cup and cover are made of transparent plastic, allowing for visual inspection during the grinding process. The safety feature detects if the grinding cup is missing or not correctly sealed and prevents the machine from starting; an error message appears on the display. The cup remains closed during operation; a labyrinth seal between the drive and the cup retains dust, whilst the closed housing also reduces noise levels in everyday laboratory use.Display, timer and interfaceA multilingual OLED display shows speed, timer and error codes; operation is via a sealed membrane keypad. The timer ranges from 5 seconds to 3 minutes; interval operation can be activated if short pauses between grinding phases are required, for example to allow the chamber to cool down in the meantime. Test conditions can be programmed and saved, making repeated grinding runs reproducible without having to reset the speed and time each time. A USB-B interface connects the mill to a computer for experiment control and documentation; the appropriate cable is supplied. Heat-sensitive material can also be cooled using dry ice without the need to open the cup.Typical applicationsThe 40-ml cup is particularly suitable for small to medium sample sizes, such as those encountered in routine seed testing.Grinding of seeds such as maize and wheat prior to analysisBatch sample preparation without the need for cleaning between batchesDigestion of hard, brittle and dry materials up to Mohs hardness 5Reproducible test series thanks to stored programsTechnical detailsMax. useful volume40 ml (MT 40)Motor power input / output100 W / 80 WSpeed range5,000 to 25,000 rpm, deviation ±2 %Maximum peripheral speed65 m/sFeed materialup to Mohs hardness 5, particle size max. 10 mmDuty cycle (ON)3 minInterfaceUSB-BPermissible ambient conditions5 to 40 °C, max. 80 % relative humidityConnected load220 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz, 100 W (100 to 120 V version available)Degree of protectionIP 30 (DIN EN 60529)Dimensions W x H x D180 x 170 x 300 mmWeight2.7 kgScope of delivery1 x Tube Mill control drive unit1 x MT 40 milling tube, 40 ml1 x MMT 40.1 reusable grinding cup1 x Coupling extractor1 x USB A-to-B cableAt the end of its useful life, this electrical appliance must be disposed of via the separate collection scheme for waste electrical and electronic equipment and must not be placed in household waste.Individual requirements and procurement serviceThose who regularly grind larger sample volumes of up to 100 ml are better served by the IKA Tube Mill 100 control, which also accommodates the larger MT-100 cup. For seed and grain analysis involving high cup consumption, the IKA Tube Mill control Agriculture Solution combines the same drive unit with a set of 10 disposable grinding cups. Additional grinding chambers and accessories for IKA mills can be requested via our procurement service, as can customised combinations of several cup formats. IKA provides a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty on the unit, which is extended to 3 years upon registration at ika.com/register within 90 days of purchase.Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the capacity of the grinding cup supplied? The MT 40 has a maximum capacity of 40 ml; a reusable cup (MMT 40.1) is also included. Will the unit start even if the cup is not correctly sealed? No, the safety electronics detect a missing or incorrectly sealed cup and will then prevent the unit from starting. How long is the warranty valid for?IKA provides a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty, which is extended to 3 years if you register at ika.com/register within 90 days of purchase. What is the difference between the Tube Mill control and the Tube Mill 100 control? The Tube Mill control is designed solely for the 40-ml cup, whilst the Tube Mill 100 control also accommodates the larger 100-ml cup and is therefore slightly taller and heavier. Can the ground material be cooled?Yes, the grinding chamber can be cooled with dry ice whilst the cup remains closed. What is the difference between the MT 40 and the MMT 40.1 supplied with the unit? The MT 40 is a disposable cup for cross-contamination-free individual samples, whilst the MMT 40.1 is a reusable cup of the same size for applications where this is not a requirement. Both are included in the scope of delivery.
