IKA Tube Mill control, single-use analytical mill, 25,000 rpm, 0004180000

Product information "IKA Tube Mill control, single-use analytical mill, 25,000 rpm, 0004180000"

To grind small, dry samples whilst preventing any cross-contamination between batches: that is what the IKA Tube Mill control is designed for. The batch mill operates with a patented disposable grinding beaker with a volume of up to 40 ml, achieves a speed of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute and is specifically designed for hard, brittle materials such as seeds. After grinding, the jar is not cleaned but replaced with a new one, which saves time between samples and eliminates the risk of carry-over. For laboratories that process many small batches in succession, for example, in seed testing, this is precisely what makes the difference to their daily workflow.

Disposable grinding beaker with safety features

The supplied MT 40 has a maximum capacity of 40 ml of sample material and is designed to process hard, brittle and dry materials up to Mohs hardness 5 with a maximum feed particle size of 10 mm. The grinding jar and cover are made of transparent plastic, allowing for visual inspection during the grinding process. The safety feature detects if the grinding jar is missing or not correctly sealed and prevents the machine from starting; an error message appears on the display. The jar remains closed during operation; a labyrinth seal between the drive and the jar retains dust, whilst the housing itself is dust-tight, thereby also reducing noise levels in everyday laboratory use.

Display, timer and interface

A multilingual OLED display shows speed, timer and error codes; operation is via a dust-tight membrane keypad. The timer ranges from 5 seconds to 3 minutes; interval operation can be activated if short pauses between grinding phases are required, for example to allow the chamber to cool down in the meantime. Test conditions can be programmed and saved, making repeated grinding runs reproducible without having to reset the speed and time each time. A USB-B interface connects the mill to a computer for experiment control and documentation; the appropriate cable is supplied. Heat-sensitive material can also be cooled using dry ice without the need to open the beaker.

Typical applications

The 40-ml beaker is particularly suitable for small to medium sample sizes, such as those encountered in routine seed testing.

  • Grinding of seeds such as maize and wheat prior to analysis
  • Batch sample preparation without the need for cleaning between batches
  • Digestion of hard, brittle and dry materials up to Mohs hardness 5
  • Reproducible test series thanks to stored programmes

Kinetics of impact comminution on a closed microscale In the analytical sample preparation of hard, brittle and dry matrices (such as rocks, mineral solids or tablets), the application of substantial mechanical energy is essential. The IKA MT 40 single-use grinding jars operate on the process principle of high-speed impact and percussion comminution on an isolated 40-ml scale. A solid stainless-steel beater is permanently integrated at the geometric centre of the chamber. Driven by the magnetic coupling of the IKA Tube Mill base station at up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, this rotor transmits immense kinetic energy to the solids. The resulting radial shock waves overcome the molecular bonding forces of the sample, shatter macroscopic lattice structures in fractions of a millisecond and transform them into an analytically homogeneous, fine-powdered matrix. Polymer physics and thermomechanical integrity The high-speed comminution of extremely hard samples induces significant thermodynamic stress (exothermic reaction) due to friction and wall collisions. The MT 40 grinding jars are manufactured from high-performance thermoplastic polymers that exhibit extreme torsional rigidity and structural ballistic impact resistance. This specific polymer matrix is designed to withstand the massive kinetic impacts of rock fragments or seeds without undergoing plastic deformation (fracture prevention). At the same time, the material integrity ensures that no interfering plasticisers or polymer particles are released into the analytical matrix under thermal stress. Aerosol containment and elimination of carry-over When grinding toxic, infectious or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), preventing uncontrolled aerosol formation is an absolute safety priority. The MT 40 grinding beaker functions as a hermetically sealed containment system. The process takes place in a completely sealed atmosphere, thereby physically protecting the user from respirable fine dust. The fundamental metrological design principle as a ‘single-use’ vessel also guarantees that analytical cross-contamination (carry-over of DNA fragments or chemical traces) between consecutive batches is completely eliminated. The thermodynamically and time-consuming cleaning of conventional stainless-steel grinding chambers is completely eliminated. Technical details Product type: Disposable grinding beaker / single-use milling tube Processing principle: Impact and shock comminution (dry milling) Maximum usable volume: 40 ml Integrated tool: Permanently fitted standard stainless steel beater Material: Impact-resistant, transparent, high-performance thermoplastic Analytical focus: 100% prevention of cross-contamination (carry-over) Workplace safety: Hermetic containment against toxic dusts and aerosols Compatibility (drive): Exclusively compatible with the IKA Tube Mill (control / 100) Packaging unit (PU): 10 pieces per set Contents 10 x IKA MT 40 disposable grinding jars (40 ml) (Important note: The IKA Tube Mill drive unit is not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MT 40.10 grinding beakers are dedicated single-use consumables and function exclusively in combination with the IKA Tube Mill drive system. For laboratories with extremely high sample throughput, it is both metrologically and economically advisable to stock the beakers in larger packs so as not to interrupt the continuous workflow of sample preparation. Tribological degradation and preventive maintenance The multi-pass grinding chambers of the IKA Tube Mill series (MMT 40.1 and MMT 100.1) operate at the extreme limits of mechanical capability. Rotational speeds of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, combined with highly abrasive sample matrices (such as mineral ores or rocks), generate massive tribological friction forces on the dynamic sealing elements and mechanical bearings. This continuous stress inevitably leads to gradual degradation of the elastomers and microscopic wear on the rotating contact surfaces. The IKA A-MMT.100 spare parts kit restores the grinding chamber’s original kinematic and thermodynamic integrity by replacing the system’s process-critical wear parts before metrological or mechanical failure of the batch occurs. Restoration of system hermeticity and aerosol containment A fundamental safety consideration in the dry grinding of toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is the absolute prevention of leaks. If the elastomeric seals become brittle due to thermomechanical stress, the grinding chamber loses its function as a hermetic containment system. Microscopically fine, respirable dust (aerosols) could escape into the laboratory environment through the compromised O-rings. The preventative replacement of the sealing elements using the A-MMT.100 set fully restores this critical physical barrier and guarantees complete protection for the user in accordance with the strictest occupational safety regulations. Kinematic stabilisation and resonance suppression Worn mechanical components within the grinding chamber axis not only cause leaks but also generate fluid dynamic imbalances. This eccentricity of the rotating shaft leads to high-frequency vibrations, which place a strain on the Tube Mill’s magnetic drive and exponentially increase thermodynamic friction (exothermic reaction) within the sample chamber. The installation of brand-new replacement parts ensures that the drive shaft is once again precisely coaxially aligned. This mechanical resonance suppression ensures that the kinetic energy flows loss-free into the impact comminution of the sample and that the analytical reproducibility of the particle size distribution is permanently maintained. Technical details Product type: Spare parts set / Wear parts kit (Maintenance Kit) Process function: Restoration of dynamic system hermeticity Tribological focus: Compensation for mechanical wear on sealing elements Kinematics: Coaxial stabilisation of the drive shaft Occupational safety: Restores hermetic aerosol containment Quality assurance: Ensures GLP-compliant reproducibility of grinding results Compatibility: Suitable exclusively for IKA MMT 40.1 and MMT 100.1 (reusable grinding chambers) Contents of delivery 1 x IKA A-MMT.100 spare parts set (Important note: The MMT grinding beakers and the Tube Mill drive unit are not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The reusable MMT 40.1 and MMT 100.1 systems offer a high degree of analytical flexibility; however, unlike single-use jars (MT series), they require strict adherence to maintenance intervals. To prevent cross-contamination (carry-over) and mechanical failure, wear parts must be replaced at regular intervals depending on the abrasiveness of the sample matrix. For laboratories processing high volumes of hard rock samples, we recommend always keeping several spare parts kits in stock to ensure that the ongoing analytical workflow is not interrupted by safety-related downtime. Please contact our procurement service at any time regarding the strategic procurement of maintenance kits.

Fluid mechanics and hermetic aerosol containment The high-speed impact grinding of dry, brittle solids in the IKA Tube Mill System generates immense thermodynamic and fluid-mechanical stresses. Rotational speeds of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute generate strong hydrodynamic turbulence and significant internal overpressure within the MT 40 grinding chamber. The ground material is partially converted into microscopically fine, respirable dust (aerosols). The IKA MTC 40 lid acts as a critical physical barrier against this internal pressure. It seals the system both positively and by friction and functions as a hermetic containment system that absolutely reliably prevents the escape of potentially toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) into the laboratory atmosphere. Polymer physics and thermomechanical dimensional stability The conversion of kinetic energy into frictional heat (exothermic reaction) subjects the grinding chamber to thermal stress during the grinding process. The MTC 40 lids are made from a high-performance thermoplastic polymer whose macromolecular structure is precisely engineered to withstand these thermomechanical stress peaks. The geometry of the sealing lips retains its physical dimensional stability even as temperatures rise within the reaction chamber. Softening or plastic deformation of the lid – which would inevitably lead to micro-leakage and the loss of the system’s hermetic seal – is physically prevented by the polymer’s high glass transition temperature. Elimination of carry-over and analytical sample archiving In high-throughput laboratories (high-throughput analytics), the prevention of molecular cross-contamination (carry-over of DNA fragments or chemical traces) is the paramount analytical principle. The MTC 40.100 Set (bulk pack of 100 units) supports the Tube Mill’s strict single-use concept. Once the grinding process is complete, the sample vessel can be permanently sealed with the lid and transferred directly to cold storage or long-term archiving. The thermodynamically complex process of transferring the fine-powdered matrix – which always poses a risk of contamination and exposure to the user – is completely eliminated. Technical details Product type: Sealing lid / aerosol containment cover Process function: Hermetic system seal against overpressure Occupational safety: Blocks respirable fine dust and toxic aerosols Material: Thermomechanically dimensionally stable high-performance polymer Analytical focus: 100% prevention of cross-contamination Process integration: Enables direct long-term archiving of ground samples Compatibility (vessel): Exclusively compatible with IKA MT 40 disposable grinding jars Compatibility (drive system): IKA Tube Mill (control / 100) Packaging unit (PU): 100 pieces per set Contents 100 x IKA MTC 40.100 lids for disposable grinding jars (Important note: The MT 40 grinding beakers and the Tube Mill drive unit are not included in the scope of delivery!) Custom requirements & accessories The MTC 40 lids are purely sealing and safety components that fulfil their technical function exclusively in conjunction with the IKA MT 40 disposable grinding jars. For forensic, clinical or geochemical laboratories processing hundreds of samples per week, the combination of MT 40 beakers and MTC 40 lids is the only process engineering solution to ensure a process chain that is completely free from cross-contamination, from grinding through to long-term archiving. Kinetics of impact comminution on a closed microscale In clinical diagnostics and molecular biological sample preparation, the physical disruption of tissues or solids (such as bones, teeth or infected plant material) is a process-critical step. The IKA MT 40 sterile disposable grinding jars operate on the process principle of high-speed impact and percussion comminution on an isolated 40-ml scale. A solid stainless-steel beater is permanently integrated at the geometric centre of the chamber. Driven by the magnetic coupling of the IKA Tube Mill base station at up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, this rotor shatters macroscopic tissue and cell structures in fractions of a millisecond. The resulting radial shock waves transform the sample into an analytically homogeneous, fine-powdered matrix that is optimally accessible for subsequent DNA/RNA extraction. Biological integrity and industrial sterilisation In PCR-based trace analysis or forensic investigations, even the slightest presence of foreign nucleic acids or microbial enzymes (DNases/RNases) leads to a catastrophic metrological false-positive result. The MT 40 sterile beakers are pre-sterilised in a highly controlled industrial process. This process physically breaks down the macromolecular structure of potential biological contaminants inside the grinding chamber. The thermoplastic polymer matrix of the beaker is designed to withstand these sterilisation processes without any degradation of its structural and ballistic impact resistance, thereby guaranteeing absolute genetic purity (blank value) for the primary analysis buffer. Bioaerosol containment and elimination of carry-over The high-speed comminution of infectious or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients generates significant fluid-dynamic turbulence and internal pressure spikes, leading to the formation of respirable bio-aerosols. The MT 40 sterile grinding beaker functions as a hermetically sealed bio-containment system (biosafety level compliant). The process takes place in a completely enclosed atmosphere, thereby physically protecting the user from pathogens. The fundamental design principle as a sterile ‘single-use’ vessel also guarantees that analytical cross-contamination (carry-over) between consecutive patient or environmental samples is completely eliminated, as the thermodynamically and chemically error-prone decontamination of conventional stainless steel grinding chambers is entirely eliminated. Technical details Product type: Sterile single-use milling tube Processing principle: Impact and shock comminution Maximum usable volume: 40 ml Microbiological status: Industrially sterilised (to prevent genetic contamination) Integrated tool: Permanently fitted standard stainless steel beater Material: Impact-resistant, transparent, high-performance thermoplastic Health and safety: Hermetic containment against infectious bioaerosols Compatibility (drive): Suitable exclusively for the IKA Tube Mill (control / 100) Packaging unit (PU): 10 pieces per set (sterilely packaged) Contents 10 x IKA MT 40 sterile disposable grinding jars (40 ml) (Important note: The IKA Tube Mill drive unit is not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MT 40.10 sterile grinding jars are highly specialised consumables for sensitive molecular biology, clinical or forensic workflows and function exclusively in combination with the IKA Tube Mill drive system. For high-throughput forensic laboratories or pandemic reference centres that need to process hundreds of samples using standardised screening procedures, the uninterrupted availability of sterile grinding vessels is essential. Please contact our specialist procurement service at any time for strategic demand planning, the establishment of framework agreements and the procurement of sterile bulk packs.

IKA MT 40 P.10 disposable grinding beaker, interlocking beater, 40 ml, 10 pieces, 0020017838
Manufacturer number: 0020017838

Kinematic behaviour of the interlocking rotor and shear comminution In analytical sample preparation, soft, viscous, elastic or extremely fibrous matrices (such as plant tissue, plastics, paper or textiles) present a major process engineering challenge. Conventional impact beaters fail physically in this context, as elastic materials absorb the kinetic impact energy through damping effects rather than fracturing brittle. The IKA MT 40 P single-use grinding beaker is equipped with a specifically interlaced (curved) stainless steel beater to solve this rheological problem. Driven by the IKA Tube Mill’s magnetic coupling at speeds of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, this modified rotor geometry not only applies radial impact energy but also induces massive, localised shear stresses. This shearing action continuously breaks down the macromolecular fibre structures and effectively prevents plastic deformation of the sample. Macro-fluid dynamics and prevention of wrapping effects A fundamental mechanical problem in the high-speed grinding of long fibres is the so-called winding effect. Under conditions of severe flow turbulence, fibrous materials tend to wind statically around the rotating tool shaft. This leads to an exponential increase in torsional resistance and thermal overload of the system. The asymmetrical, twisted geometry of the P-beater acts as a hydrodynamic impeller. It generates massive three-dimensional flow turbulence (vortex), which presses the material radially against the chamber wall and cuts the fibres to pieces long before static wrapping structures can form around the axis of rotation. This guarantees a homogeneous particle size distribution within the 40-ml batch without any dead zones in the flow. Aerosol containment and elimination of carry-over The high-speed comminution induces significant thermodynamic stress through wall collisions. The MT 40 P grinding beakers are manufactured from high-performance thermoplastic polymers that absorb this exothermic heat and the mechanical impacts without fracturing. When grinding toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), the closed beaker acts as a hermetically sealed containment system. It physically protects the user from inhaling respirable aerosols. The ‘single-use’ concept also completely eliminates analytical cross-contamination (carry-over) between consecutive batches at the molecular level, as it eliminates the need for the time-consuming decontamination of conventional grinding chambers. IKA MMT 40.1 Reusable grinding beaker, 40 ml, 0020003165
IKA MMT 40.1 Reusable grinding beaker, 40 ml, 0020003165
Manufacturer number: 0020003165

Kinematics of impact crushing and system reversibility In the analytical sample preparation of brittle, hard or fibrous matrices, the application of substantial kinetic energy is essential. The IKA MMT 40.1 grinding beaker utilises the process principle of high-speed impact and shock comminution on a 40-ml scale. Unlike the MT series, this module is designed as a reversible, reusable system. A solid stainless-steel beater rotates at the geometric centre of the chamber. Driven by the magnetic coupling of the IKA Tube Mill base station at up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, the tool transmits enormous shock waves to the solids, shattering their macroscopic lattice structures and transforming them into a homogeneous powder matrix. The design as a reusable vessel requires precise metrological cleaning after each batch to physically rule out analytical cross-contamination (carry-over). Thermomechanical stability and tribological wear The repeated high-speed comminution of extremely hard samples induces significant, cyclic thermodynamic stress (exothermic reaction) due to friction and collisions with the vessel walls. The MMT 40.1 grinding chamber is manufactured from a structurally cross-linked, high-performance thermoplastic. This specific plastic matrix is engineered not only to withstand the massive kinetic impacts of rock fragments without undergoing plastic deformation, but also to resist chemical and thermal degradation during repeated mechanical cleaning (dishwasher-safe). However, the rotating drive shaft and the dynamic sealing elements are subject to natural tribological wear under continuous abrasive stress, which requires preventive maintenance. Aerosol containment and system hermeticity During the grinding of toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), the rotor generates significant fluid-dynamic turbulence and internal pressure spikes. When in operation, the MMT 40.1 grinding bowl functions as a hermetically sealed containment system. The built-in elastomer seals absolutely reliably prevent the escape of respirable fine dust or toxic aerosols into the laboratory atmosphere. To ensure this critical system hermeticity in the long term, the chamber’s seal integrity must be evaluated from a process engineering perspective following numerous rinsing and grinding cycles. Technical details Product type: Reusable milling tube / Multi-Use Milling Tube Process principle: Impact and shock comminution Maximum usable volume: 40 ml Integrated tool: Permanently fitted standard stainless steel beater Material: High-temperature and chemical-resistant polymer Hygiene and cleaning: Fully dishwasher-safe (machine-washable) Health and safety: Hermetic containment against toxic dusts and aerosols Maintenance: Dynamic seals and bearing components are replaceable Compatibility (drive): Suitable exclusively for the IKA Tube Mill (control / 100) Contents 1 x IKA MMT 40.1 reusable grinding beaker (40 ml) (Important note: The IKA Tube Mill drive unit is not included!) Individual requirements & accessories The MMT 40.1 reusable grinding jar is the economically and environmentally scalable solution for laboratories with moderate sample throughput or homogeneous sample matrices, where the risk of serious cross-contamination can be managed through validated cleaning procedures. Please note that the dynamic elastomer seals in the rotational axis are subject to wear. To prevent a sudden loss of aerosol containment or irregular kinematics, these wear parts must be replaced at regular intervals. For this purpose, use only the original IKA A-MMT.100 spare parts kit (item no. 0020003378). Please contact our procurement service at any time regarding the strategic procurement of spare parts.

Kinetics of impact comminution and its relevance to materials science In the analytical sample preparation of hard, brittle matrices (such as rocks, soil samples or mineral solids), the application of substantial mechanical energy is essential. The IKA MTT 40 single-use grinding beakers operate on the process principle of high-speed impact and percussion comminution on an isolated 40-ml scale. Driven by the magnetic coupling of the IKA Tube Mill base station at up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, the integrated rotor transfers immense kinetic energy to the solids. The resulting radial shock waves overcome the molecular binding forces of the sample and transform it into a fine-powdered matrix. The key process-related modification to this beaker lies in the material properties of the impact tool: it is made of solid titanium rather than conventional stainless steel. Metallurgical interference and abrasion prevention A fundamental mechanical problem when comminuting hard, abrasive samples is tribological tool wear. The micro-collisions between the matrix and a conventional stainless steel beater inevitably lead to metallic abrasion. This introduction of foreign ions (specifically iron, chromium and nickel) results in significant spectroscopic interference and metrological errors in sensitive trace analysis (such as AAS, ICP-OES or ICP-MS). The use of the MTT 40 titanium beater completely eliminates this specific metallurgical contamination. Titanium exhibits excellent mechanical toughness and ensures that, during geochemical or environmental analytical investigations, the sample’s original heavy metal content (blank value) is not distorted by the grinding tool. Aerosol containment and elimination of carry-over The high-speed comminution of extremely hard samples induces significant thermodynamic stress (exothermic reaction). The chamber wall, made of high-performance thermoplastic, absorbs these kinetic impacts and thermal loads without fracturing. When grinding toxic or biohazardous samples, the closed beaker also functions as a hermetically sealed containment system. The process takes place in a completely sealed atmosphere, thereby physically protecting the user from respirable aerosols. Finally, the fundamental design principle of a ‘single-use’ vessel guarantees that analytical cross-contamination (carry-over) between consecutive batches is completely eliminated, as the thermodynamically demanding decontamination process is entirely eliminated. Technical details Product type: Single-use milling tube Tool geometry: Permanently fitted standard beater made of pure titanium Processing principle: Impact and percussion comminution (dry milling) Maximum usable volume: 40 ml Material (vessel): Impact-resistant, transparent high-performance thermoplastic Analytical focus: 100% prevention of stainless steel abrasion (Fe, Cr, Ni) in trace analysis Health and safety: Hermetic containment against toxic dusts and aerosols Compatibility (drive): Exclusively compatible with the IKA Tube Mill (control / 100) Packaging unit (PU): 10 pieces per set Contents 10 x IKA MTT 40 disposable grinding jars (titanium beader, 40 ml) (Important note: The IKA Tube Mill drive unit is not included in the scope of delivery!) Individual requirements & accessories The MTT 40.10 grinding jars are highly specialised consumables for analytical solid-state spectroscopy. The metrological selection of the correct jar is essential: for standard grinding applications where the iron content of the sample is irrelevant, the standard MT 40 jar (stainless steel beater). However, as soon as the absolute integrity of element-specific trace analysis is required, switching to this MTT version with a titanium rotor is physically imperative in order to avoid systematic measurement errors.
