The high-speed impact grinding of dry, brittle solids in the IKA Tube Mill System generates immense thermodynamic and fluid-mechanical stresses. Rotational speeds of up to 25,000 revolutions per minute generate strong hydrodynamic turbulence and significant internal overpressure within the MT 40 grinding chamber. The ground material is partially converted into microscopically fine, respirable dust (aerosols). The IKA MTC 40 lid acts as a critical physical barrier against this internal pressure. It seals the system both positively and by friction and functions as a hermetic containment system that absolutely reliably prevents the escape of potentially toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) into the laboratory atmosphere.

Polymer physics and thermomechanical dimensional stability

The conversion of kinetic energy into frictional heat (exothermic reaction) subjects the grinding chamber to thermal stress during the grinding process. The MTC 40 lids are made from a high-performance thermoplastic polymer whose macromolecular structure is precisely engineered to withstand these thermomechanical stress peaks. The geometry of the sealing lips retains its physical dimensional stability even as temperatures rise within the reaction chamber. Softening or plastic deformation of the lid – which would inevitably lead to micro-leakage and the loss of the system’s hermetic seal – is physically prevented by the polymer’s high glass transition temperature.

Elimination of carry-over and analytical sample archiving

In high-throughput laboratories (high-throughput analytics), the prevention of molecular cross-contamination (carry-over of DNA fragments or chemical traces) is the paramount analytical principle. The MTC 40.100 Set (bulk pack of 100 units) supports the Tube Mill’s strict single-use concept. Once the grinding process is complete, the sample vessel can be permanently sealed with the lid and transferred directly to cold storage or long-term archiving. The thermodynamically complex process of transferring the fine-powdered matrix – which always poses a risk of contamination and exposure to the user – is completely eliminated.
