Product information "IKA RC 5 basic recirculating chiller, high-performance laboratory chiller, 0004181000"
The IKA RC 5 basic recirculating chiller represents an extremely high-performance, energy-efficient and thermodynamically optimised system solution for precise liquid cooling and the reliable removal of high process heat loads on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale. As a highly advanced chiller within the IKA range of thermostatic peripherals, this system has been specifically designed for demanding and parallel cooling requirements – such as the simultaneous supply of multiple rotary evaporators, large laboratory reactors, pilot plants or heat-intensive analytical instruments (e.g. electron microscopes, X-ray diffractometers and laser systems). In intensive process separation procedures or exothermic syntheses, a constant and powerful cooling capacity is the primary criterion for achieving temperature-stable condensation rates and for conserving precious water resources in a sustainable and material-friendly manner.
Highly efficient cooling kinetics and a forward-looking refrigerant
The process engineering foundation of the RC 5 basic is based on a closed, electronically monitored refrigeration circuit with an outstanding cooling capacity of up to 1,400 watts (at a medium temperature of 20 degrees Celsius). With a wide operating temperature range from -30 degrees Celsius to room temperature, this powerhouse reliably handles even the most demanding low-temperature applications. An outstanding feature in terms of materials science and environmental sustainability is the use of the natural, F-gas-compliant refrigerant R290 (propane). Thanks to its negligible global warming potential (GWP=3), this system drastically minimises the environmental footprint of modern large-scale laboratories, operates highly efficiently and is fully future-proof.
Robust fluid mechanics and generous tank capacity
The mechatronic design is engineered for maximum service life whilst maintaining high hydraulic flow rates. The integrated, high-quality discharge and suction pump delivers a maximum flow rate of up to 31 litres per minute at a maximum discharge pressure of 0.6 bar. These fluid-mechanical characteristics guarantee rapid, uniform flow through complex external consumer loops and effortlessly compensate for flow resistance in extensive hose networks. The generously sized fluid reservoir, with a maximum capacity of 7 litres, acts as an excellent thermodynamic buffer. It absorbs sudden thermal load peaks in a way that protects the material and guarantees outstanding temperature stability of +/- 0.1 K in accordance with DIN 12876.
Intuitive media management and uncompromising occupational safety
The RC 5 basic’s user interface impresses with its ergonomically clear layout and intuitive operation. A large, high-contrast LED display shows the setpoint and actual temperatures, as well as the current pump speed, in real time. For optimum media management, the unit features a front-mounted sight glass for continuous monitoring of the fill level, as well as a practical drain port at the rear, which enables a quick and clean change of the temperature control fluid. The safety-oriented system architecture includes integrated dry-run and overheating protection, visual and audible fault alerts, and an easily accessible, cleanable air filter grille to ensure maximum condenser efficiency at all times.

Important note: Suitable temperature-control fluids (e.g. water-glycol mixtures) and vacuum- and pressure-resistant connecting hoses are not included in the standard scope of delivery and must be ordered separately according to the specific application. Operation with pure H₂O is only recommended at operating temperatures above 5 degrees Celsius to reliably prevent the heat exchanger from freezing.
Customised requirements & accessories
To ensure the IKA RC 5 basic delivers its maximum performance, we stock a comprehensive range of connection components and consumables. For leak-free media transport at low temperatures, we recommend highly flexible, thermally insulated NBR or silicone hoses, including sturdy hose clamps, to minimise condensation build-up in the working environment. For low-temperature operation below 5 degrees Celsius, the use of genuine IKA cryogenic fluids (such as Labotherm) is essential to reliably prevent the internal heat exchanger from freezing. For seamless integration into automated test profiles, the system can be linked to the IKA laboratory software labworldsoft ® via the integrated interfaces. Please use our technical procurement service to configure your large-scale cooling system.
