Glass breakage under vacuum is rare, but when it happens, the coating of the condenser decides whether splinters remain controlled inside the condenser jacket or are released. The IKA RV 3 V-C rotary evaporator is therefore built on the same drive and heating bath combination as the RV 3 V base package, but replaces the uncoated glassware with coated vertical glassware RV 10.10. The RV 3 eco drive unit with manual lift and the HB eco S099 water heating bath up to 99 degrees Celsius remain identical, supplemented by an additional NS 29 clamp for the coated glassware. For training laboratories or workstations with higher safety requirements, this is an obvious extra cost compared with the uncoated base package.
Selection guide: RV 3, RV 8 or RV 10, and which specification level?
Within the RV 3 series, the RV 3 V and RV 3 V-C differ only in the glassware version: uncoated for the RV 3 V, coated for the RV 3 V-C. Both share the drive, heating bath, speed range and heating temperature range up to 99 degrees Celsius. Anyone who needs higher temperatures up to 180 degrees Celsius will only find this specification from the RV 8 series onwards. The following overview classifies the five common complete packages of the RV series.

Differentiation within the RV family
Anyone who can do without the glass coating and would like to save a little will find, in the IKA RV 3 V rotary evaporator the same drive and heating bath combination with uncoated glassware. Anyone who needs higher heating bath temperatures up to 180 degrees Celsius and a wider speed range is better served by the IKA RV 8 V . For laboratories that also want an integrated vacuum pump in the set, the Pro version IKA RV 3 pro V-C Complete rotary evaporator is the next step up. Since the RV 3 V-C includes neither a vacuum pump nor a recirculating chiller, we recommend the IKA RC 2 lite recirculating chiller, which according to the manufacturer is expressly intended for cooling rotary evaporators. Anyone who is unsure whether the coating is really needed in their own laboratory can compare the two RV 3 versions directly using the identical technical data and base the decision solely on the glass question.
Typical applications
The RV 3 V-C rotary evaporator is suitable for the same applications as the uncoated base package, with the additional safety aspect of the glass coating:
- Routine solvent evaporation and recovery where additional splinter protection is wanted when working under vacuum
- Concentrating aqueous samples and extracts as part of sample preparation
- Teaching and training laboratories in which coated glass is required or recommended for safety reasons
- Budget-oriented equipping of second or replacement workstations with higher safety requirements
- Chemistry, pharmaceuticals, bioindustry, research and development, production and quality assurance, and plant engineering as the fields of application named by the manufacturer
Manual vacuum control and the role of the glass coating
As with the uncoated RV 3 V, pressure control without an integrated vacuum controller lies with the separately procured vacuum pump or an upstream vacuum controller. Applying the vacuum slowly and step by step at the start of the process reduces the risk of bumping and mechanical stress on the glass. This is exactly where the coating of the RV 10.10 glassware comes in: it does not replace careful operation, but in the unlikely event of glass breakage under vacuum it reduces the risk of splinters flying around, because the coating holds them back inside the condenser jacket. For operations with safety briefings or training requirements, this is a factually understandable reason to accept the extra cost of the V-C version compared with the uncoated RV 3 V.
Use, installation and maintenance
The drive unit is designed for ambient temperatures of 5 to 40 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of up to 80 per cent, protection class IP 20 according to DIN EN 60529. The manual lift requires somewhat more attention than a motorised lift when raising and lowering the glassware. The additional NS 29 clamp secures the coated RV 10.10 glassware and should be checked regularly for a firm fit, so that the coating can actually develop its protective effect in the event of glass breakage. The HB eco water heating bath should be checked regularly for water level and limescale deposits. The RV 10.8001 seal on the vapour duct is a wearing part and should be the first thing to check if vacuum tightness declines. The drive unit is operated at 100 to 240 volts at 50 or 60 hertz and draws up to 1400 watts, so a normal laboratory socket is sufficient for operation. Since the coating is a surface layer on the glass, gentle handling without abrasive aids is advisable when cleaning, so that it reliably keeps its protective function over the entire service life of the glassware and is not damaged prematurely by mechanical abrasion.

Regulatory information
The RV 3 V-C is an electrical device and is therefore subject to the WEEE Directive (ElektroG), registered under IKA number DE 66784213. At the end of its service life, the statutory take-back obligation applies, and disposal with household waste is excluded.
Investment logic: what is in the set, what is still missing?
The drive, heating bath and coated glassware are already covered by the RV 3 V-C, but for operation under vacuum a vacuum pump of its own is missing, and for a closed cooling circuit a recirculating chiller such as the IKA RC 2 lite. Anyone who can foresee needing higher heating bath temperatures or an integrated vacuum pump should rather go straight to the RV 8 V or to the Pro version RV 3 pro V-C Complete than retrofit, since the heating bath and drive cannot be replaced afterwards. The extra cost compared with the uncoated RV 3 V is limited to the glassware, and all other investment decisions for vacuum pump and chiller are identical for both versions. Anyone who already operates an uncoated RV 3 V in the laboratory and wants to procure a second device with higher safety requirements can share the vacuum pump and recirculating chiller unchanged between both devices, since nothing changes in the connection values.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the glassware coated? The coating of the RV 10.10 vertical glassware offers additional splinter protection should the glass break under vacuum.
- Is a vacuum pump included in the scope of delivery? No, the package contains the drive, heating bath and glassware. A vacuum pump has to be procured separately for operation under vacuum.
- How hot does the heating bath get? The HB eco water heating bath heats from room temperature up to 99 degrees Celsius. For higher temperatures, the RV 8 V with oil heating bath is more suitable.
- How does the device differ from the RV 3 V? Drive, heating bath and speed range are identical. The only difference is the coated instead of uncoated glassware together with the additional NS 29 clamp.
- Which recirculating chiller suits this device? The manufacturer expressly names the cooling of rotary evaporators as a field of application for the IKA RC 2 lite.
- How is the lift operated? The lift is manual, with a stroke of 150 mm, without a motor or programming.
- Is the extra cost compared with the uncoated model worthwhile? That depends on the safety requirements of the respective workstation. Technically, the drive, heating bath and speed range are identical in both versions.
- Is the additional NS 29 clamp only needed for this device? It belongs specifically to the coated RV 10.10 glassware and is therefore part of the scope of delivery of the RV 3 V-C, but not of the uncoated RV 3 V.
