The IKA ROTAVISC hi-vi II HELI Complete rotational viscometer is a highly advanced, mechatronic system solution for the precise rheological characterisation and viscosity determination of extremely high-viscosity, pasty and non-flowing media. This turnkey complete system has been specifically validated for demanding applications in the chemical industry, cosmetics and pharmaceutical production, as well as in building materials and polymer research. When handling complex classes of substances such as creams, gels, pastes, rubber or viscous resins, the precise measurement of flow behaviour is the primary criterion for optimising formulations whilst minimising damage to the material, controlling production processes reliably and consistently meeting the highest quality standards.
Prevention of channeling via the motorised HELIPATH system
The process engineering foundation of this specialised ‘HELI’ version is the integrated, motorised stand system. With viscoelastic or highly thixotropic samples, standard rotating spindles tend, during continuous operation, to cut a channel through the medium (known as channel formation), causing the spindle to lose contact with the actual sample matrix and generating transient measurement errors. The HELIPATH drive reliably eliminates this phenomenon: it moves the viscometer head continuously and slowly up and down vertically during the measurement. The rotating T-spindle thereby traces a three-dimensional helix (screw line) through the medium and constantly cuts into fresh, undisturbed sample material.
Maximum metrological precision and thermodynamic monitoring
From a materials science perspective, the torque kinetics of the ‘hi-vi II’ classification covers the highest viscosity range and allows measurements up to a remarkable 320 million mPas. Torque measurement operates with outstanding accuracy of \pm1\ % of the full measurement range and a reproducibility of \pm0.2\ %. As the viscosity of a fluid mechanical phase is extremely strongly influenced by the ambient temperature, the system features a direct connection for a PT1000 temperature sensor. This enables seamless, real-time thermodynamic monitoring of the sample directly on the high-resolution 4.3-inch TFT display, allowing temperature-induced viscosity drifts to be compensated for whilst minimising damage to the material.
Digital connectivity and advanced GLP compliance
The ROTAVISC’s electronic system architecture guarantees seamless integration into modernised laboratory infrastructures. Via the integrated USB and RS232 interfaces, the instrument can be fully linked to the optional labworldsoft laboratory software ®, ensuring automated test plan control, transient data acquisition and GLP/GMP-compliant documentation of all rheological parameters. The intuitive user menu guides laboratory staff reliably through functions such as automatic spindle and collar recognition, user-specific ramp programmes and limit value monitoring, thereby reliably minimising operating errors in multi-user operation.
