Product information "Kern OBL 127 Transmitted-light Microscope, Binocular, 4x-100x, Köhler Illumination"
The Kern OBL 127 is a binocular transmitted-light microscope with infinity optics and pre-centred Köhler illumination. Four Infinity E-Plan objectives cover magnifications from 4x to 100x; with the 10x eyepieces, this results in a total magnification of 40x to 1,000x. Kern describes the OBL series as suitable for demanding transmitted light applications. Accessories include phase contrast, polarisation, dark-field, a fluorescence unit and a trinocular tube.
Optics and revolver
The revolver has four positions and holds the standard 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x Infinity E-Plan objectives. A 20x objective is not included as standard; it is listed as an accessory with a 0.45 aperture, as is a 60x objective. The HWF-10x eyepieces have a field of view of 20 mm, an anti-fungus coating and a high eye point. The head is a butterfly tube, inclined at 30 degrees and rotatable; the interpupillary distance can be adjusted between 50 and 75 mm. Dioptre adjustment is on one side.
Köhler illumination and condenser
The Abbe condenser with an aperture of 1.25 is permanently pre-centred and focusable; an aperture diaphragm and field diaphragm are included. This simplifies the Köhler adjustment, as the centre cannot be displaced. The LED transmitted light illumination has a power of 3 watts and is continuously dimmable. The unit is powered by a mains adaptor (100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz, 0.3 A, protection class III).
Cross-table and focus
The large mechanical cross-table, with a travel range of 76 x 52 mm, can hold up to two specimens at the same time. The coaxial coarse and fine adjustment knobs are located on both sides; the fine adjustment knob moves in increments of 0.002 mm. The unit measures 395 x 200 x 380 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 7 kg. Kern describes the base as robust and ergonomic.
Expansion options via accessories
The extensions are all separate items from Kern. Selection from the range of accessories for the OBL 127:
| Trinocular tube | OBB-A1580, for camera connection |
| Contrast techniques | Dark-field condenser (OBB-A1422), polarisation unit (OBB-A1277), phase-contrast units with PH-Plan objectives 10x to 100x |
| Fluorescence | 100 W HBO epi-fluorescence unit with 6-filter wheel (OBB-A1153) |
| Objectives | 20x/0.45 spring-loaded (OBB-A1250), 60x/0.8 spring-loaded (OBB-A1270), 100x water (OBB-A1437), 2x (OBB-A1655) |
| Eyepieces | WF 10x and WF 16x (Ø 23.2 mm), HWF 10x with scale or pointer |
| Cameras | ODC 874 and ODC 881 (microscope cameras) |
| Filters | Yellow, green and grey |
Those planning to use a camera from the outset are more likely to choose the trinocular OBN 135 with five objectives or, for fluorescence, the OBN 141. The OKO 178 is intended for metallurgy using reflected light.
Typical applications
Kern describes the OBL series as suitable for demanding transmitted light applications. Its specifications make it suitable for use with transmitted light specimens in brightfield mode; with accessories, it can also be used in phase contrast, polarisation, darkfield and fluorescence modes.
- Transmitted light microscopy in brightfield
- Examinations using phase contrast, polarisation or dark-field (accessories)
- Fluorescence examinations with a fluorescence unit (accessory)
- Routine work on two specimens on the cross-table
Frequently asked questions
What is the magnification of the OBL 127? The objectives provide magnifications of 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x. With the 10x eyepieces, this gives a magnification range of 40x to 1,000x.
Can a camera be connected? The standard head is binocular. Kern supplies a trinocular tube (OBB-A1580) as an accessory.
Can I use fluorescence? Yes, with the optional fluorescence unit featuring a 100 W HBO lamp (OBB-A1153).
How precisely can the focus be adjusted? The fine-adjustment knob adjusts in increments of 0.002 mm.
