Product information "Kern OBN 141 Fluorescence Microscope, Trinocular, 4x-100x, LED Transmitted Light and Epi-fluorescence"
On the Kern OBN 141, the excitation light for fluorescence comes from a 5-watt LED in reflected light mode, whilst the bright-field transmitted light comes from a second 3-watt LED. This upright microscope is part of the OBN-14 series and is fitted with a trinocular head, Infinity-Plan objectives ranging from 4x to 100x, and Köhler illumination. Kern describes it as a fluorescence microscope for professional users.
Fluorescence unit and filters
The fluorescence system utilises 5 W LED epi-illumination. The filter wheel can accommodate up to six filters and comes fitted with B/G fluorescence filters as standard. A centring objective for fluorescence adjustment is supplied with the instrument. Transmitted light and reflected light can be dimmed separately, allowing brightfield and fluorescence to be adjusted independently. Kern offers further filters, such as a blue filter (OBB-A1170), as accessories.
Objectives, eyepieces and head
The five-position revolver holds the 4x, 10x, 20x, 40x and 100x Infinity-Plan objectives. With the HWF-10x eyepieces (20 mm field of view, anti-fungus, high eye point), this gives a magnification range of 40x to 1,000x. The Siedentopf tube is trinocular, inclined at 30 degrees and rotatable. The interpupillary distance ranges from 50 to 75 mm, and the dioptre adjustment operates on both sides. For higher demands on colour correction, Kern offers Infinity-Plan semi-apochromatic objectives with 10x, 20x, 40x and 100x magnification as accessories. Further eyepieces with a scale (0.1 mm) and a 2x objective are listed.
Köhler illumination, condenser and stage
The Köhler illumination system features an adjustable field stop. The Abbe condenser with an aperture of 1.25 is centring- and height-adjustable and has an adjustable aperture stop. The very large mechanical cross-table has a travel range of 78 x 55 mm; the coarse and fine adjustment knobs are located on both sides and are coaxial, with the fine adjustment knob providing 0.002 mm increments. The unit measures 510 x 470 x 515 mm (W x D x H) and has a net weight of 13 kg. Power is supplied via a plug-in power supply unit (100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz, 0.3 A, protection class III).
Camera and other contrast techniques
The third tube outlet accommodates a camera via a C-mount adapter (OBB-A1514 or 0.75x with OBB-A1590). Kern offers several cameras for the OBN 141, including the cooled fluorescence camera ODC 861 and the tablet camera ODC 241. Polarisation and phase contrast can be added via accessories, and according to Kern, the modular design also allows for dark-field condensers and a butterfly tube.
OBN 141 or another model
The OBN 135 is the trinocular sister model in the OBN range, but comes as standard as a brightfield instrument with fluorescence available only via accessories. The OBL 127 is binocular and, as standard, a pure transmitted-light instrument. If you want fluorescence as standard, choose the OBN 141.
Typical applications
Kern describes the OBN 141 as a fluorescence microscope for professional users, equipped with fluorescence filters and LED epi-illumination as standard. This configuration makes it suitable for use with fluorescence-labelled specimens and in brightfield mode.
- Fluorescence microscopy with B/G filters
- Köhler-style bright-field transmitted light microscopy
- Documentation using a camera mounted on the trinocular tube
Frequently asked questions
What type of illumination does the fluorescence system use? A 5 W LED for epi-fluorescence. The brightfield transmitted light system has its own 3 W LED.
How many filters fit into the filter wheel? Up to six. B/G fluorescence filters are fitted as standard.
What is the magnification of the OBN 141? The objectives range from 4x to 100x; with the 10x eyepieces, this gives a magnification of 40x to 1,000x.
Can I connect a camera? Yes, the head is trinocular. The C-mount adapter is available as an accessory.
