The Kern EMB 500-1 is a battery-operated entry-level balance with a weighing range of up to 500 grams and a readability of 0.1 grams. Kern offers it as the ‘School Balance’, a simple school and laboratory balance suitable for teaching as well as for routine tasks in industry and practice. The balance is supplied ready for use with batteries and can therefore be used without the need for a mains power supply.

Simple operation, robust weighing technology

The EMB 500-1 utilises a strain gauge weighing system and achieves a resolution of 5,000 parts. Reproducibility and linearity are 0.1 grams and ± 0.2 grams respectively, and the display stabilises within 3 seconds. The taring range covers the entire weighing range of 500 grams. For external adjustment, Kern recommends a Class M1 test weight of 500 grams at the 500-gram calibration point.

Battery operation for mobile use

The balance is supplied ready for use with a 9 V block battery; Kern specifies an operating time of 35 hours. This makes the EMB 500-1 independent of a fixed power supply, allowing it to be used where there is no mains socket within reach, such as at a changing workstation or whilst moving between different rooms.

Underfloor weighing and units of measurement

A hook for underfloor weighing is included in the scope of delivery, allowing objects to be weighed below the balance. In addition to grams, the EMB 500-1 also displays dwt, ozt and oz. For density determination, the Kern accessory set YDB-04 is also available; this is not included as standard.

External adjustment with test weight

Unlike precision balances with automatic internal adjustment, such as the Kern EWJ 600-2SM, the EMB 500-1 does not adjust itself. Adjustment requires an external M1-class test weight of 500 grams at the 500-gram calibration point.

Operating conditions and warranty

The EMB 500-1 is designed for ambient temperatures of 5 to 35 °C. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, it contains no substances prohibited under REACH. According to Kern & Sohn, this device comes with a 2-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
