With an internal volume of 449 litres, the Memmert UF450 universal oven is the large floor-standing model of the UF range and is designed for batches that no longer fit into smaller ovens. Like the more compact Memmert UF160 universal oven, it features an air turbine with electronic control in 10 % increments for forced air circulation and covers a temperature range from 20 to 300 °C. Fitted with castors that can be moved and locked in place, the cabinet, which weighs around 161 kg, can be moved around the laboratory or production hall despite its size, without having to be lifted each time.

Forced air circulation on a large scale: even heat distribution even when the interior is full

With an internal volume of 449 litres and up to 8 shelves, the active air circulation is particularly noticeable: without an air turbine, the heat would be distributed much more unevenly within such a large interior and would rise more slowly. The UF450’s electronically controlled air turbine ensures that the working temperature range, which, as with all UF models, is at least 10 °C above room temperature up to 300 °C, is reliably achieved even with large, densely packed batches. A DIN Class A Pt100 temperature sensor with 4-wire measurement provides a setting accuracy of 0.1 °C up to 99.9 °C and 0.5 °C from 100 °C onwards, regardless of the size of the unit.

ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY and three-phase power supply for industrial use

The UF450 is controlled via the ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY, an adaptive, multifunctional digital PID microprocessor controller with a TFT colour graphics display, which can be used to set the temperature, forced air circulation motor speed, exhaust air damper position, programme duration and time zone. A digital countdown timer ranging from 1 minute to 99 days and the SetpointWait function, which only starts the process time once the setpoint temperature has been reached, ensure reproducible processes even during long, unattended runs. As an oven of this size requires correspondingly higher heating power, the UF450 is powered by 400 V three-phase current and 3 x 230 V without a neutral conductor at 50/60 Hz and with a power consumption of approximately 5,800 W, rather than the single-phase connection used by the smaller models. The data logger can be read via the Ethernet interface; a time-limited trial version of the AtmoCONTROL software is available for download.

Capacity of the Memmert UF450 universal oven for large batches

The interior measures 1,040 x 720 x 600 mm; the external dimensions of the cabinet are 1,224 x 1,247 x 784 mm. There is space for up to 8 shelves, and 2 electropolished stainless steel grid shelves are included in the scope of delivery. The UF450 can be loaded with up to 300 kg in total; each shelf can hold up to 30 kg, which is significantly more than the UF160 and considerably more than the compact UN30. The interior consists of easy-to-clean stainless steel, reinforced by deep-drawn ribbing, with protected, integrated 4-sided all-round heating; the housing is made of textured stainless steel with a fully galvanised sheet steel rear panel. The fully insulated stainless steel doors are secured by a two-point locking mechanism with a compression door lock.

Selection guide: choosing the right size from the UF range

The Memmert UF range comprises eight models with internal volumes ranging from 53 to 1,060 litres, all featuring forced air circulation and available with TwinDISPLAY. Distinction: TwinDISPLAY and the natural convection variant

Within the UF450 series, the most important decision is whether to choose SingleDISPLAY or TwinDISPLAY. The UF450 described here operates with a single Pt100 sensor and one display; for unattended processes with higher safety requirements, the identically constructed Memmert UF450plus universal oven offers two redundant Pt100 sensors, the HeatBALANCE function for fine-tuning the distribution of heating power, and the additional AutoSAFETY monitoring, each with two TFT displays instead of one. For those who can do without active air circulation entirely, for example, because dust-sensitive samples are laid out in the open, the Memmert UN450 universal oven is the counterpart, featuring natural convection instead of an air turbine, whilst retaining the same internal volume of 449 litres.

Safety according to DIN 12880 for long, unattended processes

Process reliability is crucial, particularly for large-volume batches that often run overnight or for several days. The UF450 features adjustable electronic temperature monitoring plus a mechanical temperature limiter of protection class 1 according to DIN 12880, which switches off the heating when the temperature reaches approximately 20 °C above the maximum cabinet temperature. A self-diagnostic system assists with fault-finding, and three freely selectable temperature values can be calibrated. The unit bears CE and EAC markings as well as a UL test mark.

Use, installation and disposal

Despite its size, the same spacing requirements apply to the Memmert UF450 universal oven as to the smaller models: a minimum clearance of 15 cm from the wall, a minimum clearance of 20 cm from the ceiling and a minimum clearance of 5 cm to the side from a wall or adjacent unit, even though the cabinet can be easily manoeuvred into the correct position thanks to its castors. It may be installed at altitudes of up to 2,000 m above sea level at ambient temperatures of 5 °C to 40 °C and a maximum relative humidity of 80 %, non-condensing. Electrically, the UF450 is designed for overvoltage category II and pollution degree 2; despite the castors, it must only be transported in an upright position. The interior, made of easy-to-clean stainless steel, can be cleaned with standard laboratory cleaning agents, even with frequent batch changes.
