Memmert UF450 Universal Oven, large-capacity heating and drying oven with forced circulation, 449 litres, up to 300 °C, on castors

With an internal volume of 449 litres, the Memmert UF450 universal cabinet is the largest floor-standing model in the UF range and is designed for batches that no longer fit into smaller heating cabinets. Like the more compact Memmert UF160 universal oven, it features an air turbine with electronic control in 10 per cent increments for forced air circulation and covers a temperature range from 20 to 300 °C. Fitted with castors and lockable, the cabinet – which weighs around 161 kg – can be moved around the laboratory or production hall despite its size, without having to be lifted every time.

Large-scale forced air circulation: uniform heat distribution even when fully loaded

With an internal volume of 449 litres and up to 8 shelves, active air circulation is particularly noticeable: without an air turbine, the heat in such a large interior would be distributed much more unevenly and rise more slowly. The UF450’s electronically controlled air turbine ensures that the operating temperature range – which, as with all UF models, is at least 10 °C above room temperature up to 300 °C – is reliably achieved even with large, densely packed batches. A DIN Class A Pt100 temperature sensor with 4-wire measurement provides a setting accuracy of 0.1 °C up to 99.9 °C and 0.5 °C from 100 °C onwards, regardless of the unit size.

ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY and three-phase power connection for industrial use

The UF450 is controlled via the ControlCOCKPIT SingleDISPLAY, an adaptive, multifunctional digital PID microprocessor controller with a TFT colour graphic display, which can be used to set the temperature, recirculation fan speed, exhaust air damper position, programme duration and time zone. A digital countdown timer ranging from 1 minute to 99 days and the SetpointWait function, which only starts the process time once the setpoint temperature has been reached, ensure reproducible processes even during long, unattended runs. As an oven of this size requires correspondingly more heating power, the UF450 is operated with 400 V three-phase current and 3 x 230 V without a neutral conductor at 50/60 Hz and a power consumption of approximately 5,800 W, rather than the single-phase connection used by the smaller models. The data logger can be read via the Ethernet interface; a time-limited trial version of the AtmoCONTROL software is available for download.

Capacity of the Memmert UF450 universal chamber for large batches

The internal dimensions are 1,040 x 720 x 600 mm, whilst the external dimensions of the cabinet are 1,224 x 1,247 x 784 mm. There is space for up to 8 shelves; 2 electropolished stainless steel wire mesh shelves are included. The UF450 can be loaded with a total of up to 300 kg; each shelf can carry up to 30 kg, which is significantly more than the UF160 and considerably more than the compact UN30. The interior consists of easy-to-clean stainless steel, reinforced by deep-drawn ribbing, with protected, integrated 4-sided all-round heating; the housing is made of textured stainless steel with a fully galvanised sheet steel rear panel. The fully insulated stainless steel doors are secured by a 2-point locking mechanism with a compression door latch.

Selection guide: choosing the right size from the UF range

Eight sizes ranging from 53 to 1,060 litres of internal volume make up the Memmert UF range with forced air circulation, each also available with TwinDISPLAY. When choosing the right size, the key factors – in addition to the internal volume – are the footprint and the number of shelves required.

The UF450 sits between the more compact Memmert UF260 universal cabinet (256 litres) and the very large models starting at 749 litres. Those requiring even more capacity will find it in the Memmert UF750 universal cabinet, which is also fitted with castors. Differentiation: TwinDISPLAY and the natural convection variant

Within the UF450 series, the most important decision is between SingleDISPLAY and TwinDISPLAY. The UF450 described here operates with a single Pt100 sensor and one display, for unattended processes with higher safety requirements, the structurally identical Memmert UF450plus universal cabinet offers two redundant Pt100 sensors, the HeatBALANCE function for fine-tuning the heat output distribution, and the additional AutoSAFETY monitoring, each with two TFT displays instead of one. For those who can do without active air circulation entirely – for example, because dust-sensitive samples are laid out in the open – the Memmert UN450 universal cabinet is the ideal alternative, featuring natural convection instead of an air turbine, whilst maintaining the same internal volume of 449 litres.

Safety in accordance with DIN 12880 for long, unattended processes

Process reliability is crucial, particularly for large-volume batches that often run overnight or for several days. The UF450 features adjustable electronic temperature monitoring plus a mechanical temperature limiter of protection class 1 in accordance with DIN 12880, which switches off the heating when the temperature reaches approximately 20 °C above the maximum cabinet temperature. A self-diagnostic system assists with fault-finding, and three freely selectable temperature values can be calibrated. The unit bears CE and EAC markings as well as a UL mark.

Application, installation and disposal

Despite its size, the same spacing requirements apply to the Memmert UF450 universal cabinet as to the smaller models: a minimum of 15 cm clearance from the wall, a maximum of 20 cm clearance from the ceiling and a minimum of 5 cm clearance on either side from a wall or adjacent unit, even though the cabinet can be easily manoeuvred into the correct position thanks to its castors. It may be installed at altitudes of up to 2,000 m above sea level at ambient temperatures of 5 °C to 40 °C and a maximum relative humidity of 80 per cent, non-condensing. Electrically, the UF450 is designed for overvoltage category II and pollution degree 2; despite the castors, it must only be transported in an upright position. The interior, made of easy-to-clean stainless steel, can be cleaned using standard laboratory cleaning agents, even with frequent batch changes. As an electrical appliance, the UF450 is subject to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act at the end of its service life and must not be disposed of with household waste; see Regulatory Information below.
