Memmert UF450mplus universal cabinet, heating cabinet for physiotherapy with TwinDISPLAY, 449 litres, Class I medical device

Product information "Memmert UF450mplus universal cabinet, heating cabinet for physiotherapy with TwinDISPLAY, 449 litres, Class I medical device"

The Memmert Um UF450mplus universal cabinet is not a laboratory drying cabinet for general use, but a Class I medical device in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2017/745, intended for the heating and maintenance of fango, silicate and APS packs in physiotherapy. Technically, it is based on the same housing as the UF450plus laboratory/industrial cabinet, with an internal volume of 449 litres, a temperature range of 20 to 300 °C, TwinDISPLAY with two redundant Pt100 sensors, HeatBALANCE and AutoSAFETY; however, it is intended for medical use rather than general laboratory and industrial applications.

Convection heating with redundant temperature measurement for physiotherapy

The UF450mplus’s air turbine, which is electronically controllable in 10 per cent increments, actively distributes heat throughout the interior and achieves an operating temperature range from at least 10 °C above room temperature up to 300 °C. Two DIN Class A Pt100 sensors in a 4-wire configuration monitor each other; if one fails, the second automatically takes over its function. The setting accuracy is 0.1 °C up to 99.9 °C and 0.5 °C from 100 °C onwards, which is important for the uniform heating of packaging material to the temperature intended for use on the patient. Preheated fresh air is introduced via an electronically adjustable exhaust air flap.

ControlCOCKPIT TwinDISPLAY: HeatBALANCE and AutoSAFETY

The UF450mplus is controlled via the ControlCOCKPIT TwinDISPLAY, which features two high-resolution TFT colour graphic displays. The HeatBALANCE function allows fine-tuning of the heat output distribution between the upper and lower heating groups from –50 to +50 per cent. AutoSAFETY also monitors over- and under-temperature conditions, automatically tracks the setpoint within a freely selectable tolerance range and triggers visual and audible alarms in the event of a deviation; if the setpoint is exceeded, the heating system switches off – an important safety feature when preparing packaging materials for use on patients. Programmes are programmed, managed and transferred via the Ethernet interface or USB port using the AtmoCONTROL software.

Capacity and connections of the Memmert UF450mplus universal cabinet

The interior measures 1,040 x 720 x 600 mm and accommodates 2 electro-polished stainless steel grids as standard; up to 8 shelves are possible in total. A total load of up to 300 kg and up to 30 kg per shelf are permitted, sufficient for several batch loads to be processed in parallel. The external dimensions of the cabinet are 1,224 x 1,247 x 784 mm, with a net weight of approximately 161 kg. The interior consists of easy-to-clean stainless steel, reinforced by deep-drawn ribbing, with protected, integrated 4-sided all-round heating; the housing is made of textured stainless steel with a fully galvanised sheet steel rear panel. The UF450mplus is connected to a 400 V three-phase supply and 3 x 230 V without a neutral conductor at 50/60 Hz and has a power consumption of approximately 5,800 W; it is mounted on castors and can be moved and locked in place.

Class I medical device: Intended use and classification

The UF450mplus is classified as a Class I medical device in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2017/745, with the intended purpose of heating and maintaining the temperature of fango, silicate and APS packs in physiotherapy. This classification distinguishes it fundamentally from the technically identical laboratory and industrial unit, the Memmert UF450plus universal cabinet, which is intended for drying, tempering and material testing, but has no medical intended use. Anyone procuring equipment for a physiotherapy practice requires the mplus model described here, not the general-purpose laboratory unit. The data sheet provides no information regarding the conformity assessment procedure; for Class I medical devices without a measuring function, a self-declaration by the manufacturer in accordance with (EU) 2017/745 is standard practice, but this is not explicitly confirmed in the present document.

Distinction: Physiotherapy device versus laboratory/industrial cabinet

Anyone looking for a unit for drying, tempering or material testing processes in a laboratory or industrial setting should consider the Memmert UF450plus universal cabinet; it is technically largely identical but does not have a medical intended purpose and is generally more cost-effective to procure, as no medical device documentation is required. The UF450mplus described here is intended exclusively for the physiotherapy application specified in its intended use. On the manufacturer’s website, Memmert uses the same product photograph for the UF450mplus as for the UF450plus; there is no separate photograph of the medical variant there, and the units are indistinguishable in appearance.

Safety in accordance with DIN 12880, enhanced by AutoSAFETY

In addition to the adjustable electronic temperature monitoring and AutoSAFETY, the UF450mplus features a mechanical temperature limiter of protection class 1 in accordance with DIN 12880, which switches off the heating when the temperature reaches approximately 20 °C above the maximum cabinet temperature. The display also allows the user to select either a temperature selector monitor of protection class 3.1 or a temperature selector limiter of protection class 2. An integrated self-diagnostic system assists with fault finding, and three freely selectable temperature values can be calibrated. The unit bears CE and EAC markings as well as a UL test mark.

Installation, operation and disposal

For operation, a minimum clearance of 15 cm from the wall and a maximum clearance of 20 cm from the ceiling must be maintained; a minimum clearance of 5 cm is sufficient on the sides from the wall or an adjacent unit. Installation is permitted at altitudes of up to 2,000 m above sea level, at an ambient temperature of 5 °C to 40 °C and a relative humidity of no more than 80 per cent, non-condensing. Electrically, the cabinet is designed for overvoltage category II and pollution degree 2; it must only be transported in an upright position. Thanks to its castors, the UF450mplus can still be repositioned within these specifications at a later date, for example when treatment rooms are being redesigned. As an electrical appliance, it is subject to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act at the end of its service life and must not be disposed of with household waste; see Regulatory Information below.

Typical areas of application

As a Class I medical device, the Memmert UF450mplus universal cabinet is intended exclusively for physiotherapeutic applications involving fango, silicate and APS packs.

  • Heating of fango packs for physiotherapy applications
  • Heating and maintaining the temperature of silicate packs
  • Heating and maintaining the temperature of APS packs
  • Physiotherapy practices, rehabilitation centres and clinics offering the relevant treatments

Reason for investment: the right device for the intended purpose

The UF450mplus is supplied with 2 electropolished stainless steel wire shelves; the cabinet is designed to accommodate up to 8 inserts. The investment decision here is primarily a question of intended use, not of features: anyone procuring equipment for a physiotherapy facility with a specific intended use must opt for the UF450mplus medical device. On the other hand, anyone looking for a laboratory or industrial unit for drying, tempering or materials testing is better served by the Memmert UF450plus universal cabinet, which is of identical construction but is not classified as a medical device. An additional Pt100 sensor is available as an option for extra over-temperature monitoring. For continuous data logging, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter and AtmoCONTROL software licences – including an FDA-compliant version – are available. For standard-compliant applications, we arrange calibration, IQ/OQ/PQ and maintenance services, including those accredited by DAkkS.
