For samples that need to be stored safely at minus 80 °C on a permanent basis, but where floor space is limited, the Memmert ULT240 is the most compact model in the ULT series. With an internal capacity of 244 litres and a setting temperature range of -50 to -86 °C, it can accommodate up to 162 2-inch cryoboxes and is mounted on castors that can be moved and locked in place.
Compact floor-standing unit for the smallest size
With external dimensions of 700 x 1,832 x 738 millimetres, the ULT240 requires the smallest floor space in the series; the next largest model, the ULT360, is 888 millimetres deep whilst having the same width. Nevertheless, with internal dimensions of 450 x 1,111 x 489 millimetres, the interior is large enough for a four-compartment layout with two stainless steel internal doors and three height-adjustable shelves. The net weight is around 245 kilograms; the unit stands on castors and can be locked into place at the installation site.
Touchscreen and temperature monitoring
The ULT240 is operated via a 7-inch touchscreen, which is ergonomically integrated into the outer door. The temperature can be set with a setting accuracy of 0.1 °C and is monitored by a Pt1000 sensor; Ethernet LAN and USB are available as interfaces. In the event of a power cut, a backup battery takes over the alarm and monitoring functions; the alarm is triggered both visually and audibly.
Cascade cooling and safety
The low temperatures are achieved by a cooling system with two compressors connected in cascade: the first stage uses the refrigerant R455A, the second stage uses R170, with an air-cooled condenser. A door-open detection system alerts the operator if the insulated stainless-steel outer door, fitted with a mechanical lock, remains open; a side lead-through with a diameter of 26 millimetres serves as a pressure relief opening. The unit bears the CE mark.
Transport and installation
Like all units in the ULT series, the ULT240 must only be transported in an upright position. On site, the ULT240 can be rolled into position on its castors and locked in place. When packed, it measures 900 x 2,050 x 900 millimetres and has a gross weight of around 310 kilograms.
When the next larger model, the ULT360, is a better choice
Anyone currently planning for significantly fewer than 162 boxes but expecting a growing sample collection should not underestimate the required capacity. If it is foreseeable that more than 162 2-inch format boxes will be stored permanently, the ULT360, with a capacity of 360 litres and otherwise identical specifications, is the more suitable choice, with the same width of 700 millimetres and a cabinet depth of 888 millimetres instead of 738 millimetres.
