The MXT-1 70120 has a length of 15 m, an inner diameter of 0.25 mm and a film thickness of 0.25 µm, so the thicker of the two films in the shop. It is a metal capillary column with a non-polar, crosslinked dimethyl polysiloxane phase.
Construction
The tube is made of stainless steel with a Siltek coating (WCOT column). Metal brings strength, and the coating the inertness of glass. The coil diameter is 4.5 inch.
On the phase: non-polar, crosslinked dimethyl polysiloxane, USP classes G1, G2, G9 and G38. Comparable phases from other manufacturers are Agilent DB-PS1, Quadrex UAC-1 and Quadrex UAC-1MS.
Temperatures
Lower limit -60 °C, upper limit 360 °C at a constant oven temperature and 430 °C in a temperature program. These values also apply to the thinner version with 0.10 µm. The range from -60 °C allows low starting temperatures in a program.
Notes on the column
The tube measures 15 m, the inner diameter is 0.25 mm and the phase film 0.25 µm. The film is the layer of the phase on the tube wall, and crosslinked means linked polymer chains. The upper limits 360 °C and 430 °C distinguish isothermal operation from the temperature program.
Film thickness compared
Length and inner diameter match 70105. Compared with that column (0.10 µm), the 70120 has a film 0.15 µm thicker. A change alters retention times, so the method has to be revalidated afterwards.

Typical applications
General-purpose column for solvent impurities, also for PCB congeners such as Aroclor mixtures, gases, odorants for natural gas, sulphur compounds, hydrocarbons and oxygenates. In addition there are high-temperature chromatography, field instruments, process GCs and GCs with small ovens. The assignment applies equally to the thinner version 70105. For high-temperature chromatography, the programmed upper limit is 430 °C.
