With 30 m length, 0.25 mm inner diameter and 0.25 µm film thickness, the Rxi-5Sil MS 13623 is the longer of the two Rxi-5Sil MS columns in the shop. It is a crosslinked phase of low polarity on fused silica, designed for GC-MS with low column bleed.
Phase structure
The polymer contains phenyl groups in the backbone (silarylene phase). This means better thermal stability, less column bleed and a lower tendency to oxidise. The composition is crosslinked 1,4-bis(dimethylsiloxy)phenylene dimethyl polysiloxane, and the USP phase classes are G27 and G36. The tube material is fused silica.
Comparable phases are found from Agilent (DB-5msUI), Phenomenex (ZB-5MSplus) and Supelco (SLB-5ms). Comparable part numbers are Agilent 122-5532UI and Phenomenex 7HG-G030-11.
Usable temperature range
Lower limit -60 °C, upper limit 320 °C isothermal and 350 °C with a programmed temperature. The values are the same for 15 m and 30 m, so starting at low temperatures is possible in both lengths.
What the dimensions mean
The 30 m gives the length of the capillary tube, 0.25 mm the inner diameter and 0.25 µm the thickness of the phase film on the tube wall. In a crosslinked phase, the polymer chains are linked to one another. In the temperature data, isothermal stands for a constant oven temperature and programmed for an oven temperature changed according to a program.
The second length in the shop
The shorter version 13620 has a length of 15 m with the same diameter and film thickness. Switching between the two lengths changes retention times, so an existing method has to be revalidated.
