Product information "Sauter HMM Portable Leeb Hardness Tester, 170 to 960 HLx, Type D Sensor"
The Sauter HMM is a portable Leeb hardness tester with an external Type D rebound sensor. Compared to stationary benchtop units and hardness testers with an internal sensor, it is designed for portability and flexibility.
The Leeb method in this instrument
A rebound module is propelled against the test specimen by a spring. Depending on the hardness of the specimen, it absorbs kinetic energy. The instrument measures the reduction in velocity and converts this into Leeb hardness values. The measuring range extends from 170 to 960 HLx; the hardness scale is HLD; the resolution is 1 HLx; and the tolerance is 1 per cent of the maximum value.
Test direction: any
Automatic compensation allows measurements to be taken in any test direction, i.e. over 360 degrees. The device automatically recognises the connected sensor. The measuring probe is 14.6 cm long and has a diameter of 2 cm. Test specimens should weigh at least 2 kg. Adapter rings (AHMR 01) are available as accessories for secure positioning.
Conversion to other hardness scales
The measurement result is automatically converted into all the hardness units listed. These include Rockwell (B and C), Vickers (HV), Brinell (HB), Shore (HSD), Leeb (HL) and tensile strength in MPa. The mini-statistics display shows the measured value, average value, direction of measurement, date and time. The internal data memory can store up to 9 measured values.
Printer, reference block, carrying case
An infrared printer outputs the measurement results directly. It is included in the Scope of delivery, as are a hardness comparison block (790 ± 40 HL) and a robust carrying case. Further test blocks of type D/DC, with an accuracy of 4 HL, a diameter of 90 mm (± 1 mm) and a weight of approximately 2.7 kg, are available for 790 ± 40 HL (AHMO D02), 630 ± 40 HL (AHMO D03) and 530 ± 40 HL (AHMO D04).
Design and operation
The plastic housing measures 150 x 80 x 30 mm; the unit has a net weight of 0.25 kg. The display is an LCD; power is supplied by three AAA cells, either as alkaline-manganese batteries or as a rechargeable NiMH battery. The operating range is 0 °C to 50 °C, and the storage temperature is -10 °C to 40 °C. A factory calibration is available under item no. 961-131. The packaging measures 380 x 280 x 80 mm, and the shipping weight is 4.6 kg.
Typical applications
The following applications are indicated by the manufacturer’s specifications:
- Mobile hardness testing on the object rather than on a benchtop unit
- Testing in any direction (360 degrees)
- Conversion of a measured value to HRC, HRB, HV, HB, HL and MPa
- Calibration of the instrument using hardness comparison blocks
- Documentation via infrared printer or mini-statistics
For those wishing to measure material thickness rather than hardness, the Sauter TN 80-0.01US offers a measuring range of 0.75 to 80 mm. The Sauter FC 500 is available for tensile and compressive forces.
