Product information "Sauter TN 80-0.01US Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauge, 0.75 to 80 mm, Readability 0.01 mm"
The Sauter TN 80-0.01US measures material thicknesses using ultrasonic pulse-echo technology. The measuring range is from 0.75 to 80 mm, with a resolution of 0.01 mm. The 6 mm diameter probe is attached to a 0.9 m long cable; the unit itself, with a housing measuring 150 x 74 x 32 mm and a net weight of 0.30 kg, fits comfortably in the hand.
Measuring range and accuracy
Sauter specifies the tolerance as 0.5 per cent of the maximum value. In order for the device to convert the echo transit time into a thickness, the speed of sound in the material must be known. The TN 80-0.01US covers sound velocities from 1,000 to 9,999 m/s. The display shows measurements in millimetres or inches; the unit can be selected. The display is an LCD. The measuring range using the pulse-echo method starts at 0.75 mm and ends at 80 mm; materials thinner or thicker than this are outside the range.
Scanning or single-point
There are two measurement modes to choose from. In scan mode, the device takes ten measurements per second; in single-point mode, it provides one value per measurement point. Scan mode is suitable for scanning a surface, whilst single-point mode is used for measurements at defined locations.
Memory and USB
The internal data memory stores up to 20 files, each containing up to 100 individual values, totalling up to 2,000 values. The USB data interface is fitted as standard; Sauter supplies the FL-A01 USB/PC connection cable as an accessory. Power is supplied by two AA batteries (alkaline-manganese), which are included in the Scope of delivery.
Measuring heads for other tasks
An external probe with a 6 mm diameter is included. Probes from the Sauter range of accessories cover other applications: ATU-US01 (2.5 MHz, Ø 14 mm), ATB-US02 (5 MHz, Ø 12 mm), ATB-US06 (5 MHz, Ø 8 mm), ATU-US09 (5 MHz, Ø 10 mm), ATU-US02 (7 MHz, Ø 6 mm) and the pulse-echo probe ATU-US10 (5 MHz, Ø 10 mm). Ultrasound contact gel is included in the Scope of delivery; a refill pack (ATB-US03, approx. 70 ml) can be ordered separately.
Storage and operation
The device operates and is stored at temperatures between -10 °C and 40 °C. The housing is made of plastic. A factory calibration is available under item no. 961-113. It is supplied in a robust carrying case; the packaging measures 312 x 250 x 85 mm and has a shipping weight of 1.6 kg.
Typical applications
The device’s technical specifications make it suitable for the following tasks:
- Thickness measurement on materials from 0.75 to 80 mm
- Measurement of materials with sound velocities from 1,000 to 9,999 m/s
- Surface scanning in scan mode at ten measurements per second
- Point measurement with storage of up to 100 values per file
- Transfer of measured values to a PC via USB
If you’re testing hardness rather than thickness, look no further than the Sauter HMM. The Sauter FC 500 is a digital force gauge for tensile and compressive testing.
