With a usable volume of 112 litres, the Binder BD 115 Standard incubator offers significantly more capacity than the smaller BD models, without compromising on the gentle operating principle of natural convection. Natural convection for gentle, reproducible incubation

The BD 115 operates entirely without a fan. Heat is distributed evenly across the chamber walls via APT.line technology, which, according to the manufacturer, ensures high temperature accuracy without forced air flow affecting the samples. This is a key advantage for open-incubated agar plates or sensitive cell cultures, as it neither accelerates evaporation nor stirs up spores within the chamber. An electromechanically controlled exhaust flap allows the air exchange to be precisely adjusted as required.

Energy-efficient in continuous operation

According to the manufacturer, the BD 115 is up to 30 per cent more energy-efficient than standard market models. With a connected load of 0.35 kW and continuous operation over several days or weeks – typical for this size of unit – this makes a noticeable difference in day-to-day laboratory operations, particularly when several units are in use simultaneously.

Ease of use and data logging

The BD 115 is controlled via a controller with an LCD display. A USB port records the process data, which is helpful for documentation in accordance with GLP guidelines. The ergonomic handle design facilitates operation in day-to-day laboratory work, whilst the full-height inner door made of safety glass allows visual inspection of the samples without opening the main door and disrupting the temperature profile. An integrated Class 3.1 temperature selector monitor in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, monitors the setpoint temperature in addition to the control system – an important feature for unattended, extended incubation runs.

Compact footprint despite increased capacity

With external dimensions of 710 x 605 x 705 mm (W x D x H) and a weight of 54 kg, the BD 115 remains relatively compact despite its significantly larger interior and is designed to be stackable, meaning that a second BD 115 can be stacked on top of it in a space-saving manner as requirements grow. The scope of delivery includes two chrome-plated insert grids for sample placement.

The choice of size depends on the regular sample throughput: the BD 056 or BD 115 are sufficient for small runs, whilst the BD 260 or BD 400 are better suited for daily runs or multiple parallel test series. As the BD 115 is designed to be stackable according to the data sheet, a second unit can be added in a space-saving manner should requirements increase.

Distinction: BD, BF and the KB-series refrigerated incubators

The key difference compared with the BF series lies in the operating principle: whilst the BD 115 distributes heat via natural convection along the chamber walls, the Binder BF 115 uses a fan for active air circulation. In addition to the Avantgarde.Line, to which the BD 115 belongs, BINDER also offers the more compact Solid.Line, which has a lower temperature range of up to 70 °C instead of 100 °C. If temperatures below room temperature are required, a refrigerated incubator such as the Binder KB 130 is the right choice rather than a standard incubator; its range of 0 to 70 °C also covers temperatures below room temperature.
