Product information "Binder BF 400 Standard Incubator with forced air circulation, 400 litres, 9010-0241"
The Binder BF 400 is one of the large-capacity models in the BF series of BINDER standard incubators and, with a useful volume of 400 litres, offers significantly more capacity than the smaller models in the series. As a floor-standing unit with a height of just over one metre, the BF 400 is designed for laboratories that regularly need to incubate larger quantities of samples or several parallel batches simultaneously. The temperature range extends from 7 to 10 °C, through room temperature, up to 100 °C, enabling the unit to reliably handle standard incubation tasks in microbiology, cell culture and food testing, even with high sample volumes.
Uniform temperature distribution through active air circulation
With an internal chamber volume of 400 litres and multiple shelf levels, active air circulation has a particularly noticeable effect. Whilst BINDER’s BD models, which rely on natural convection, may experience temperature differences between the upper and lower regions of the chamber, the fan in the BF 400 ensures continuous air mixing. For laboratories wishing to incubate larger batches under comparable temperature conditions, this is a key consideration, particularly when several shelves are in use simultaneously.
Floor-standing unit for laboratories with a high sample throughput
With external dimensions of 1,235 x 765 x 1,025 mm (W x D x H) and a weight of 145 kg, the BF 400 is designed as a floor-standing unit that can be installed in a fixed position within the laboratory. The connected load is 0.85 kW, and it operates at 230 V. The BF 400 is therefore aimed at laboratories that regularly incubate larger series of samples or more extensive batches, without necessarily requiring the largest model, the 720.
Typical applications
- Incubation of large sample series in routine microbiological laboratories
- Cell culture preparations with large batch sizes
- Extensive screening tests in food testing
- Laboratory operations with a consistently high sample throughput in quality assurance and research
Selection guide: choosing the right size from the BF series
With a capacity of 400 litres, the BF 400 is the second-largest model in the BF series, which comprises a total of five sizes ranging from 59 to 734 litres:
| Model | Useful volume | External dimensions (W x D x H) | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| BF 056 | 59 l | 560 x 565 x 625 mm | 39 kg |
| BF 115 | 114 l | 710 x 605 x 725 mm | 54 kg |
| BF 260 | 257 l | 810 x 760 x 845 mm | 85 kg |
| BF 400 (this unit) | 400 l | 1,235 x 765 x 1,025 mm | 145 kg |
| BF 720 | 734 l | 1,165 x 870 x 1,590 mm | 166 kg |
For laboratories that regularly incubate large series of samples or several large batches simultaneously, but do not yet require the largest model, the BF 720, the BF 400 is the ideal choice. If the capacity of the BF 260 is no longer sufficient for day-to-day operations, upgrading to the BF 400 is the logical next step before a further upgrade to the BF 720 becomes necessary.
Differences: BF, BD and KB series refrigerated incubators
The comparably sized Binder BD 400 offers the same 400-litre usable volume as the BF 400, but operates without a fan, utilising natural convection. With such a large interior featuring multiple shelving levels, active air circulation has a more pronounced effect than in smaller models, which is why laboratories handling high sample volumes frequently opt for the BF version. For applications below room temperature, the Binder KB 470 is available – a refrigerated incubator with a similar volume and a temperature range of 0 to 70 °C.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the BF 400 and the BD 400?
Both models offer a 400-litre usable volume; the BF 400 distributes heat via active air circulation, whilst the BD 400 operates using natural convection without a fan.
What sample throughput is the BF 400 designed for?
As a large-volume floor-standing unit with a 400-litre capacity, the BF 400 is, according to the data sheet, suitable for laboratories with a consistently high sample throughput that do not yet require the largest model, the BF 720.
Is there a smaller model than the BF 400?
Yes, within the BF series, three smaller models – the BF 056, BF 115 and BF 260 – are available, with capacities ranging from 59 to 257 litres.
Is there an alternative to the BF 400 with a cooling function?
Yes, the KB 470 cooling incubator offers a similar capacity of 472 litres and also covers a temperature range from 0 to 70 °C, including temperatures below room temperature.
