Product information "Binder ED 260 Drying and Heating Oven, Avantgarde.Line with natural convection, 255 l, up to 300 °C, 9010-0339"
Heating larger batches reliably and without air movement inside the chamber: that is what the Binder ED 260 is designed for. As the larger model in the Avantgarde.Line ED series, it offers a 255-litre usable volume with a temperature range from 5 °C above room temperature up to 300 °C, and still without an active fan. Heating is achieved solely through natural convection, which can be an advantage over forced-air models when handling larger batches containing sensitive or lightweight samples.
Large capacity, quiet airflow
Without forced air circulation, heating naturally takes longer than with a comparably sized forced-air unit such as the identically dimensioned FED 260 or FD 260 (which take around 19 minutes each to reach 150 °C). With the ED 260, the heating time to 150 °C is around 50 minutes. The spatial temperature deviation is 1.8 ± K, and the temporal deviation is 0.8 ± K. Energy consumption is 195 Wh/h (100 °C) and 355 Wh/h (150 °C) respectively and, according to the manufacturer, is up to 30 per cent lower than that of standard units on the market thanks to APT.line technology.
Controls and safety
The ED 260 is controlled via a controller with an LCD display; the exhaust air flap is controlled electromechanically. An integrated Class 2 temperature selector limiter in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, provides additional process safety during unattended drying or heat treatment cycles.
Typical applications
With a capacity of 255 litres, the ED 260 is suitable for larger batches where smooth, low-turbulence heat distribution remains a priority.
- Drying larger quantities of laboratory glassware without air turbulence
- Warm storage of batches of material sensitive to dust or particles
- Heat treatment of material samples in quality assurance
- Routine operation in industrial and research laboratories with higher throughput
With external dimensions of 810 x 760 x 940 mm and a weight of 85 kg, the ED 260 is designed as a free-standing unit. Two chrome-plated insert racks are included as standard.

Selection guide within the range
The Avantgarde.Line ED series with natural convection comprises six sizes at BINDER. All share the same temperature range, a controller with an LCD display and the electromechanically controlled exhaust air flap, but differ significantly in terms of usable volume and footprint.
| Size | Internal volume | External dimensions (W x D x H) |
| ED 23 (9010-0190) | 20 l | 435 x 520 x 495 mm |
| ED 56 (9010-0333) | 57 l | 560 × 565 × 625 mm |
| ED 115 (9010-0335) | 114 l | 710 x 605 x 705 mm |
| ED 260 (9010-0339) | 255 l | 810 x 760 x 940 mm |
| ED 400 (9010-0075) | 400 l | 1,235 x 765 x 1,025 mm |
| ED 720 (9010-0341) | 743 l | 1,165 x 870 x 1,590 mm |
The ED 260 described here, with a capacity of 255 litres, is suitable for larger batches and can be used as a freestanding tabletop unit or mounted on a sturdy stand. If this capacity is no longer sufficient, the next larger model is the ED 400 with 400 litres; for smaller quantities, there is the ED 115 with 114 litres.
Differences from forced-air models, Solid.Line and the FP and M equipment variants
The most significant distinction within the BINDER range lies between natural convection and forced air circulation: the ED 260 operates without an active fan; its forced-air counterpart with the same volume is the FD 260. Forced air circulation heats up noticeably faster; by contrast, the air inside the ED 260 hardly moves at all, which can be an advantage for large, sensitive or lightweight samples.
Anyone requiring programmable temperature and time profiles in addition to forced air circulation will not find these functions in the ED series, but rather in the FP (forced air circulation with programme functions) and M (forced air circulation with comprehensive programme functions) series within the same BINDER range. Within the Solid.Line range, LT currently stocks only the smaller ED-S 56 model with a capacity of 62 litres; BINDER does not offer a Solid.Line model in the same size range as the ED 260. BINDER also uses the designation Classic.Line for certain smaller models; however, the current master data does not provide a consistent record of which LT items belong to this third range, so no specific allocation is claimed here. An overview of the entire BINDER range available from LT Laborhandel can be found in the ‘Climate Chambers & Incubators’ category.
Application, operation and maintenance
The heating time to 150 °C is approximately 50 minutes; the spatial temperature deviation is 1.8 ± K, and the temporal deviation is 0.8 ± K. For larger batches with unevenly loaded shelves, the spatial deviation in particular affects the uniformity of the drying result; it is therefore recommended that samples be distributed evenly across both shelf racks. Energy consumption is 195 Wh/h (100 °C) or 355 Wh/h (150 °C) and, according to the manufacturer, up to 30 per cent lower than that of standard market models of this size – a factor which, over the course of the appliance’s operational life, will have a significant impact on energy costs.
Practical tip: The spacious interior can be cleaned using standard, non-abrasive laboratory cleaning agents; abrasive or chlorine-based products should be avoided. Particularly with an appliance of this size featuring multiple shelf levels, the Class 2 temperature selector limiter in accordance with DIN 12880, complete with a visual alarm, offers additional safety during unattended runs. LT Laborhandel can arrange suitable calibration certificates via its procurement service for the regular testing of temperature accuracy.
Investment rationale: When natural convection is sufficient, and when forced air circulation or programme functions are advisable
For large batches where air movement inside the chamber is to be avoided, the ED 260 is the right choice, particularly when its lower energy consumption compared with similar forced-air units becomes a significant factor during continuous operation over months or years. Conversely, where the primary focus is on short cycle times and rapid, uniform heating, the forced-air circulation of the FD 260 really comes into its own. If multi-stage temperature profiles need to be run automatically, it is worth considering the FP or M series with programme functions, provided the required capacity is available in those models.
The ED 260 comes as standard with two chrome-plated loading racks. Additional loading racks are available as accessories for higher loading densities, as are calibration certificates and maintenance contracts of varying scope; both can be obtained via LT Laborhandel’s procurement service.
Frequently asked questions about the Binder ED 260
What is the usable volume of the ED 260?
255 litres, with external dimensions of 810 x 760 x 940 mm.
What distinguishes the ED 260 from the FD 260?
The ED 260 operates using natural convection without a fan, whilst the FD 260 uses forced air circulation and therefore heats up noticeably faster. In contrast, the ED 260 avoids air movement inside the chamber.
What distinguishes the ED 260 from the smaller ED 115?
With a capacity of 114 litres, the ED 115 offers less than half the usable volume but has a more compact footprint; the operating principle is identical.
How energy-efficient is the ED 260 compared to other units?
BINDER states that APT.line technology offers up to 30 per cent lower energy consumption compared with standard market models.
Is the ED 260 also available with a 240 V connection?
Yes, in addition to the 230 V version, the unit is also available as a 240 V variant.
How do I clean the interior?
The interior can be cleaned using standard, non-abrasive laboratory cleaning agents. We advise against the use of abrasive cleaners and products containing chlorine (practical note).
