Product information "Binder ED 400 Drying and Heating Oven, Avantgarde.Line with natural convection, 400 l, up to 300 °C, 9010-0075"
Reliably drying, sterilising or heat-treating larger batches at temperatures of up to 300 °C without a fan circulating air and moving samples inside the chamber: that is what the Binder ED 400 is designed for. As one of the two larger models in the Avantgarde.Line ED series, it offers 400 litres of usable volume with a temperature range from 5 °C above room temperature up to 300 °C. Like all ED models, it operates exclusively using natural convection, which can be a clear advantage over forced-air units when handling larger batches of sensitive, lightweight or dust-sensitive samples, as nothing is blown away or stirred up by air turbulence. Where previously several smaller drying cabinets had to be run in parallel to accommodate larger quantities, the ED 400, with its large interior, handles this task in a single unit.
Smooth heat distribution across a large volume
Without an active fan, heating up naturally takes longer than with a comparably sized forced-air unit such as the FED 400, which is of identical construction (taking around 29 minutes to reach 150 °C). With the ED 400, the heating-up time to 150 °C is around 71 minutes. The spatial temperature deviation at this temperature is 3.0 ± K, whilst the temporal deviation is 0.5 ± K. Energy consumption is 672 Wh/h (150 °C) and, according to the manufacturer, is up to 30 per cent lower than that of standard market models thanks to APT.line technology and preheating chamber technology. The preheating chamber technology preheats the incoming air, ensuring that the temperature inside the chamber is distributed more evenly than in simpler convection ovens, despite the absence of forced air circulation. For applications where the focus is not on heating times measured in minutes, but on the gentle, steady heating of large quantities, this balance between heating speed and process gentleness has been deliberately chosen.
Cost-effectiveness in continuous operation
Particularly with a unit of this size, the APT.line technology has a noticeable impact on energy costs during ongoing operation: if the oven is operated regularly for several hours a day – for example, for batch drying or recurring heat treatment processes – the manufacturer states that the up to 30 per cent lower energy consumption compared with standard market units adds up over the service life to a measurable reduction in operating costs. The combination of natural convection and a preheating chamber eliminates the need for moving fan components inside the chamber, which further reduces the likelihood of maintenance issues compared to forced-air units. For laboratories and industrial facilities that use the ED 400 in multi-shift operation, this design pays off twice over: fewer wear parts mean less downtime, and the lower energy consumption has a direct impact on operating costs.
Operation, Connection and Safety
The ED 400 is controlled via a controller with timing functions, supplemented by a timer and an adjustable exhaust air flap for manual adaptation to the respective drying or heat treatment process. The unit can be integrated into the laboratory network via the Ethernet interface. An integrated Class 2 temperature selector limiter in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, provides additional process safety during unattended runs, such as during heat treatment overnight or at weekends. As this size requires more power than the smaller ED models, the ED 400 is designed to operate either on 400 V three-phase current or 208 V three-phase current, with a rated power of 3.4 kW and a 16 A fuse, making it suitable for use even at sites with different mains voltages. The mains connection is via a Euro plug (Type C).
Typical applications
With a capacity of 400 litres, the ED 400 is suitable for larger batches where quiet, low-airflow heat distribution remains a priority – for example, when several series of samples need to be stored or treated simultaneously at a constant temperature over an extended period as part of quality assurance.
- Drying of larger quantities of laboratory glassware and components without air turbulence
- Heat treatment of material samples in quality assurance
- Sterilisation processes for larger batches in research and industry
- Routine operation in laboratories and production areas with higher throughput
With external dimensions of 1,235 x 765 x 1,025 mm and a weight of 125 kg, the ED 400 is designed as a free-standing unit and therefore requires a stable, load-bearing installation site with access to a three-phase power supply. Two chrome-plated insert racks are included as standard.
