Product information "Binder KB 720 cooling incubator, 727 l usable volume, temperature range 0 to 70 °C, 9020-0475"
The Binder KB 720 is the second-largest model in the KB series and offers a usable volume of 727 litres within a temperature range of 0 °C to 70 °C. For those in the laboratory who regularly need to maintain a large number of samples, culture plates or several parallel test series at a constant temperature simultaneously, this compressor-cooled incubator provides ample space without compromising on control accuracy or process reliability.
Compressor cooling with natural refrigerant R-600a
The KB 720 is powered by an inverter-controlled refrigeration unit using the natural refrigerant R-600a. At 37 °C, the spatial temperature deviation is ±0.2 K and the temporal deviation is ±0.1 K; the maximum heat compensation is 640 W. The patented APT.line preheating chamber technology ensures uniform temperature distribution throughout the large interior by channelling the air over the outer walls on both sides. After the door has been open for 30 seconds, the set temperature of 37 °C is reached again after around 3 minutes; energy consumption is 255 Wh/h at 37 °C.
Typical applications
Cooling incubators such as the KB 720 are used wherever samples or cultures need to be maintained at a reproducible temperature below or close to room temperature; given its size, this model is particularly suitable for high sample volumes. Typical applications:
- Microbiological incubation of large batches of bacterial, yeast and fungal cultures
- Sterility tests and bacterial count determination in food analysis with high sample throughput
- Environmental monitoring and water analysis in pharmaceutical quality control
- Sample storage as a programmable ‘weekend fridge’ for unattended periods
- Research institutions and testing laboratories conducting multiple parallel test series
Features and load capacity for everyday laboratory use
The interior of the KB 720 is made entirely of stainless steel; the inner door is made of metal oxide-coated safety glass and allows samples to be inspected without opening the door. A door heater prevents condensation build-up. Two stainless steel grid shelves are included as standard; the interior can be expanded to accommodate up to 16 grid shelves if required, each with a load capacity of 40 kg, with a maximum total load of 200 kg. A feed-through with an 80 x 45 mm opening and a silicone plug allows external sensor or measurement cables to be fed through. To ensure process reliability, an independent adjustable temperature monitor Class 3.3 according to DIN 12880, featuring visual and audible alarms, is integrated; an internal data logger records the measured values and can be read out via USB and Ethernet. A self-test function enables a comprehensive status analysis, and thanks to the simple programming of a second temperature setpoint, the KB 720 can be automatically switched to a lower holding temperature, for example for weekend operation. A hot-air disinfection routine also supports the cleaning of the interior between test runs.
Selection guide: choosing the right size
The KB series comprises six sizes ranging from 63 to 1,070 litres. The following overview provides a direct comparison of the usable volumes and external dimensions of all sizes.
| KB 065 | 63 l | 650 x 710 x 905 mm |
| KB 130 | 127 l | 900 x 710 x 1,005 mm |
| KB 260 | 262 l | 930 x 900 x 1,396 mm |
| KB 470 | 472 l | 930 x 900 x 1,951 mm |
| KB 720 | 727 l | 1,285 x 900 x 1,951 mm |
| KB 1060 | 1,070 l | 1,285 x 1,175 x 1,951 mm |
With a capacity of 727 litres, the KB 720 is the second-largest model in the series. For those requiring even greater capacity, the Binder KB 1060 cooling incubator is the largest model available, offering 1,070 litres with a footprint about 30 % larger (1,285 x 1,175 mm instead of 1,285 x 900 mm).
Differences from the neighbouring series
For temperatures below freezing or above 70 °C, the Binder KB PRO 720 cooling incubator offers the same size with a temperature range of minus 20 °C to plus 100 °C and uses R-290 refrigerant. The KBECO series operates without refrigerant within the same 0 to 70 °C range; for example, the Binder KBECO 720 cooling incubator has a comparable volume. The KT series covers significantly smaller volumes, with a maximum of 163 litres.
Frequently asked questions before purchase
How much energy does the KB 720 consume during operation?
At 37 °C, energy consumption is 255 Wh/h; the maximum heat compensation is 640 W.
Can the KB 720 automatically switch to a different temperature at the weekend?

- Operating instructions
From cooling incubator to plant growth chamber
The KB 720 accepts the Binder LED plant light module (8012-2439) and can thus be used as a plant growth chamber. In light operation, size 720 reaches a PAR photon flux density of 1,080 µmol/m²/s at 25 cm, 740 µmol/m²/s at 50 cm and 560 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 75 cm, with a far-red irradiance of 43 W/m² at 25 cm. The temperature range is reduced to 10 °C to 50 °C during light operation, the standard KB series does not offer humidity control at all, and an ICH or CO2 module is not available for this series. Matching grid shelves with U-rails for the 16 light strips carry item number 8012-2391; installation is carried out on site.
The modules are accessories and not included with the chamber. You will find them with prices under "Matching modules" on this page; more on our Binder page.
