If several stability programmes are running simultaneously in a laboratory, or if entire batches need to be tested at once, space inside the climate chamber can quickly become limited. With a usable volume of 1,020 litres, the Binder KBF-S ECO 1020 is the largest model in the KBF-S ECO series and is therefore designed for laboratories that require a high capacity without compromising on an energy-efficient, refrigerant-free constant-climate cabinet solution.

Peltier technology – compressor-free even in large models

Even in the largest model in the series, the KBF-S ECO 1020 operates using thermoelectric Peltier technology and patented heat dissipation instead of a conventional compressor cycle. This means: no refrigerant in the unit, no F-gas issues, no recurring leak tests – a significant advantage in terms of maintenance effort and running costs, particularly for a unit of this size. The temperature range extends from 0 °C to +70 °C; the Peltier cooling achieves a maximum of 24 to 28 Kelvin below ambient temperature; whilst this does not cover a deep-freeze range, it is entirely sufficient for ICH stability conditions within the standard range (e.g. 25 °C/60 % RH or 40 °C/75 % RH). Humidity control covers 10 per cent to 80 per cent relative humidity. As there is no compressor running, the cabinet remains comparatively quiet in operation despite its size.

Uniform climate distribution across 1,020 litres of internal volume

The larger the internal volume, the more important it is to ensure an even distribution of temperature and humidity throughout the entire chamber. The APT.line pre-heating chamber technology conditions the supply and recirculated air before it flows into the test chamber, ensuring that reproducible conditions prevail even when the chamber is fully loaded across its 1,020-litre capacity, regardless of a sample’s position within the cabinet. The inner chamber is made entirely of stainless steel, is corrosion-resistant and easy to clean. Two stainless steel insert racks, including floor supports, are included in the scope of delivery and can be flexibly arranged to suit the respective batch size.

Operation, data logging and connections

The KBF-S ECO 1020 is controlled via an LCD display showing temperature, humidity, additional information and alarms. An internal data logger records the measured values, which can be downloaded in an open format via USB – essential for comprehensive documentation during extensive test programmes in accordance with GMP/GLP guidelines. An integrated self-test function supports ongoing status monitoring, whilst an Ethernet interface enables connection to a central laboratory monitoring system. Humidification is provided via an independent water supply using a canister, without the need for a fixed water connection. A feed-through fitted with a silicone plug (Ø 30 mm, left-hand) allows external sensors or cables to be inserted without having to open the chamber.

Peltier or compressor: the right technology in the Binder range

In addition to the KBF-S-ECO series, LT Laborhandel also stocks the compressor-based KBF and KBF PRO constant-climate cabinets. The KBF series covers a temperature range from 0 °C to +70 °C (with humidity control from 10 °C to 70 °C), whilst the KBF PRO series, with its extended range, even covers temperatures from -20 °C to +100 °C at humidity levels of 10 % to 98 % r.H. Anyone who requires only the temperature range typical for ICH stability tests – between 0 °C and 70 °C – and wishes to avoid refrigerants, compressor noise and the associated leak tests, the Peltier technology of the KBF-S ECO 1020 is a good choice; particularly with a unit of this size, lower energy consumption and reduced maintenance requirements make a significant difference over time. If, on the other hand, extreme climates need to be simulated – such as cold stress tests below freezing point or test temperatures up to 100 °C – the compressor-based KBF-PRO series is the more suitable choice. For extensive stability programmes that fall within the traditional ICH scope, the KBF-S ECO 1020 remains the more cost-effective solution thanks to its large capacity and energy-efficient Peltier technology.
