Product information "Binder KBF-S ECO 240 Constant-temperature cabinet, Peltier technology, 247 litres, 9020-0416"
Anyone wishing to carry out reliable stability tests in accordance with ICH guidelines in a laboratory with limited floor space requires a compact yet high-performance constant-climate chamber. The Binder KBF-S ECO 240 offers precise, combined temperature and humidity control across a 247-litre usable volume, making it the smallest model in the KBF-S ECO series – ideal for laboratories with limited space, for method development or as a first step into ICH-compliant test programmes, without having to invest in a large-volume unit straight away.
Peltier technology without a compressor or refrigerant
The KBF-S ECO 240 utilises thermoelectric Peltier technology and a patented heat dissipation system instead of a conventional compressor cycle. This eliminates the need for any refrigerant within the unit, meaning there are no F-gas issues and no recurring leak tests. The temperature range extends from 0 °C to +70 °C; whilst the Peltier cooling system can lower the temperature to a maximum of 24 to 28 Kelvin below ambient temperature, this does not cover a true deep-freeze range, though it is entirely sufficient for stability tests within the standard climatic range. Humidity control covers 10 per cent to 80 per cent relative humidity. As there is no compressor running, the cabinet operates noticeably more quietly than comparable compressor-based units, which is an advantage for laboratories where several units are housed in the same room.
Uniform climate thanks to APT.line pre-heating chamber technology
To ensure reliable stability data, the temperature and humidity distribution must be uniform throughout the entire interior, regardless of whether a sample is positioned at the top, bottom, front or rear. The APT.line pre-heating chamber technology ensures that the supply and recirculated air in the KBF-S ECO 240 are uniformly conditioned before entering the test chamber. The inner chamber is made entirely of stainless steel, is corrosion-resistant and easy to clean. Two stainless steel insert grids, including base supports, are included in the scope of delivery and can be positioned flexibly.
Operation, data logging and connections
The KBF-S ECO 240 is controlled via an LCD display, which clearly shows temperature, humidity, additional information and alarms. An internal data logger records the measured values, which can be read out in an open format via USB – a practical feature for documentation in accordance with GMP/GLP requirements. An integrated self-test function supports ongoing status monitoring. An Ethernet interface is provided for connection to a laboratory monitoring system. The water supply for humidification is provided independently via a canister, without the need for a fixed water connection. A feed-through with a silicone plug (Ø 30 mm, left) allows external sensors or cables to be inserted without opening the chamber.
Peltier or compressor: the right technology in the Binder range
In addition to the KBF-S-ECO series, LT Laborhandel also stocks the compressor-based KBF and KBF PRO constant-climate chambers in its range. The KBF series covers a temperature range from 0 °C to +70 °C (with humidity control from 10 °C to 70 °C), whilst the KBF PRO series, with its extended range, even covers temperatures from -20 °C to +100 °C at humidity levels of 10 % to 98 % RH. Those who require only the temperature range typical of ICH stability tests – between 0 °C and 70 °C – and wish to avoid the use of refrigerants, compressor noise and the associated leak tests would be well advised to opt for the Peltier technology of the KBF-S ECO 240. If, on the other hand, extreme climates need to be simulated – such as cold stress tests below freezing point or high test temperatures up to 100 °C – the compressor-based KBF-PRO series is the more suitable choice. For standard stability testing applications, the KBF-S ECO 240 offers a number of key advantages: lower energy consumption during continuous operation, no need for refrigerant management and a quieter working environment.
Typical applications
The KBF-S ECO 240 is suitable wherever temperature and humidity need to be controlled in a reproducible manner, but a large-volume interior is not required:
- Stability testing in accordance with ICH guidelines for smaller batches or reference samples in pharmaceutical development
- Method development and preliminary investigations before a larger production unit is utilised
- Shelf-life testing of cosmetic or packaging samples under defined climatic conditions
- Material testing and moisture sensitivity tests in research and quality assurance
- Use in smaller laboratories or QC areas with limited floor space
