Binder KBF-S ECO 720 Constant-Temperature Cabinet, Peltier technology, 700 litres, 9020-0418

Product information "Binder KBF-S ECO 720 Constant-Temperature Cabinet, Peltier technology, 700 litres, 9020-0418"

For those conducting long-term stability tests in accordance with ICH guidelines involving large sample volumes, whilst prioritising low running costs and quiet, continuous operation, the Binder KBF-S ECO 720 offers a high-performance solution. Despite its model designation of 720, this constant-climate chamber offers an actual usable volume of 700 litres, providing space for numerous samples whilst featuring compressor-free, refrigerant-free climate control.

Peltier technology instead of a compressor and refrigerant

At the heart of the KBF-S ECO 720 lies thermoelectric Peltier technology with patented heat dissipation. Unlike conventional compressor-based climate chambers, the unit operates entirely without refrigerant, eliminating the carbon footprint associated with fluorinated gases (F-gases) as well as the otherwise necessary periodic leak tests. Particularly in long-term tests running over several months, for example at 25 °C/60 per cent relative humidity or 40 °C/75 per cent relative humidity, the lower energy consumption of Peltier technology makes a noticeable difference to operating costs. The temperature range extends from 0 °C to +70 °C; the cooling system achieves a maximum of 24 to 28 Kelvin below ambient temperature, meaning it does not cover a deep-freeze range. Humidity control covers 10 per cent to 80 per cent relative humidity, with a temperature stability of ± 0.1 K and a humidity stability of ± 1.5 per cent RH. As there is no compressor running, the cabinet also operates significantly more quietly than comparable compressor-based units – an advantage in laboratories where work is carried out with high concentration.

Uniform climate distribution across 700 litres

A large volume is of little use if conditions are not uniform throughout. The APT.line pre-heating chamber technology in the KBF-S ECO 720 ensures horizontal airflow from both sides, so that temperature and humidity remain largely uniform regardless of whether a sample is located at the bottom, top, front or rear of the interior. Two internal doors made of stainless steel and safety glass also allow a view into the interior without disrupting the climatic conditions by opening the chamber. The inner chamber is made entirely of stainless steel; two stainless steel shelves are included, and if required, the chamber can be expanded to accommodate up to 15 shelves, each with a load capacity of 45 kg.

Safety, operation and documentation

For GMP/GLP-compliant laboratories, the KBF-S ECO 720 offers an independent equipment class 3.1 (TWW/TWB) in accordance with DIN 12880, which protects against over- and under-temperature conditions whilst providing both visual and audible alarms. The unit is controlled via an LCD display showing temperature, humidity, additional information and alarms. An internal data logger records the measured values, which can be read out in an open format via USB; process data can also be archived seamlessly and tamper-proof via the Ethernet interface and the optionally available APT-COM software. Humidification is provided by a responsive steam humidifier with an independent water supply via a canister, whilst humidity is measured using a capacitive, drift-free humidity sensor. A feed-through fitted with a silicone plug (Ø 30 mm, left) allows external probes or cables to be inserted without having to open the chamber.

Peltier or compressor: the right technology in the Binder range

In addition to the KBF-S-ECO series, LT Laborhandel also stocks the compressor-based KBF and KBF PRO constant-climate chambers. These cover an extended temperature range; the KBF PRO even ranges from –20 °C to +100 °C at humidity levels of 10 % to 98 % RH. For the temperature range between 0 °C and 70 °C, which is typical for ICH stability tests, the Peltier technology of the KBF-S ECO 720 is, by contrast, the more energy-efficient and quieter choice, without the need for refrigerant management or the associated leak tests. Where extreme climates are required, such as cold stress tests below freezing point, the compressor-based KBF-PRO series remains the more suitable option.

Typical applications

The KBF-S ECO 720 is suitable for applications involving a high sample throughput, where low running costs and quiet continuous operation are important:

  • Stability testing of medicinal products in accordance with ICH Q1A with larger batch volumes
  • Shelf-life testing of cosmetic products such as creams and lotions
  • Testing of barrier properties in packaging films under defined climatic conditions
  • Shelf-life tests to determine the best-before date in food development
  • Materials research involving more extensive test series, where several samples must be tested in parallel under identical conditions
