Paste-like and porridge-like substances often settle in a drum or bucket in distinct layers: a thinner upper layer and a thicker lower layer. An open-top sampler easily smears these layers when it is inserted. The folding sampler for all-layer samples is designed precisely for this purpose; its opening mechanism keeps the layers separate whilst the sample is being taken and can be completely dismantled for cleaning. Two lengths are available, with penetration depths of 500 and 750 millimetres, suitable for both shallower buckets and deeper drums.

Folding mechanism for viscous and paste-like media

Unlike a simple tube sampler, the folding sampler opens and closes via a dedicated mechanism designed for tough, paste-like substances. It remains closed during insertion; at the desired depth, it opens and collects the sample across the entire cross-section. According to Bürkle, the mechanism is optimised so that it remains easy to operate even after contact with sticky media. This mechanism is not necessary for free-flowing, self-flowing solids; in such cases, the simpler EasySampler is sufficient.

Fully dismantlable for cleaning

The entire folding sampler can be dismantled for cleaning, which is important when dealing with sticky, paste-like media to ensure no residues end up in the next sample. The 34-millimetre diameter provides a sufficiently wide opening to accommodate even viscous substances without clogging, whilst remaining narrow enough for most standard drum openings. For cohesive powders, which, whilst not liquid, are also difficult to homogenise, the Scratcher powder sampler may be the more suitable alternative.

Two lengths for different containers

The shorter version, with a total length of 583.5 millimetres, has a penetration depth of 500 millimetres and can collect around 300 millilitres of sample, which is sufficient for most routine analyses. The longer version, with a total length of around 833 millimetres, has a penetration depth of 750 millimetres and a sample volume of 460 millilitres, suitable for deeper drums or buckets. Both lengths have the same tube diameter of 34 millimetres, so the choice of version depends solely on the required penetration depth.

Compliance with DIN standards

Bürkle manufactures the folding sampler according to DIN 51750 Part 3 (sampling of ointment-like and solid mineral oil products such as lubricating greases) and DIN EN ISO 15528 (sampling of coating materials, paints and varnishes). Both standards set out requirements for the sampling of viscous and pasty substances, as is customary in the respective industries. For businesses that are required to document their sampling according to one of these standards, this is evidence that the design and handling of the folding sampler are specifically tailored to meet these exact requirements.

Distinction from other samplers in the range

The folding sampler specifically covers the range between free-flowing bulk materials and completely liquid media. For free-flowing, dry solids, the EasySampler is the quicker choice; for low-viscosity to moderately viscous liquids, the liquid collectors with thumb or top openings are more suitable. This clear distinction simplifies the selection process when different consistencies need to be sampled within the same facility, without having to test a new tool for each substance.
